re: Who's Death Valley was first?

Clemson literally has its Tigers name and school colors mirrored after AU. (its on Clemson's school site) Even if they were the 1st to be called Death Valley they are not beyond imitating others.

I started to attend LSU games in 54 w/my dad.
I enrolled @ LSU on an athletic scholarship in 65.

Except for Tulane Stadium (Sugar Bowl) seating about 82,000 (only selling out for the LSU game & the Sugar Bowl), LSU's 68,000 seat Tiger Stadium was the 2nd largest SEC stadium (the stadium escalation race had not yet begun) and we were leading the league in attendance. The stadium was so loud it earned the nickname " Deaf Valley " as a play on words for " Death Valley " .Our home record was good but not great during the McClendon era and if you looked @ our record during this time w/teams that were our equals in stature & rescources our home record was at best OK.

Hence the stadium nickname was not given because of our team record @ home. That's why " Death Valley " was not the choice. " Deaf Valley " was the nickname for Tiger Stadium acknowledging the support Tiger fans gave in both numbers and in LOUDNESS!

FYI If my memory serves me correctly , I would say that the only schools that consistently out drew us (bigger than 68,000 capacity & attendance)
for the season were Mich, Ohio State, Wisconsin,
So.Cal,Tex. .The others that were close or would vary would be N.D.,Mich. St., Penn. St.,Okla. Neb.,UCLA. Night games @ LSU were louder than all of them.

When lots of games started to get televised from Tiger Stadium , the national sports press had a had a hard time with Cajun names & the way Louisianians talked. Even simple ones like LeBlanc were pronounced lee-BLANK. TV sports announcers of that era, who would make a certain ESPN Gameday reporter look like a research champ. These reporters didn't hear or understand the the clarity and subtlety of " Deaf Valley. " They hijacked the term , changed & made a new generation of Tiger fans none the wiser. It made a lot of older Tiger fans think they had misunderstood it in the beginning. Ya can't stop a tsunami.

I prefer Deaf Valley anyways. Although with today's political correctness, we would have to call it, Hearing Impaired Valley.
