If so, how much and how should it be structured? Would it disadvantage the schools that lose money on their overall athletic budgets? Just football players or all athletes? Schools like Alabama, LSU, Florida, etc., could afford it but what about the others?

no. they should not.

and it's pointless to talk about, because other than scholarships and stipends for books/food/etc, college athletes will never be paid. I'm amazed that people in the media continue to discuss a topic that has zero chance of ever happening.

They already receive full rides to their university with a free education.
I don't understand this whole pay the players thing. I can guarantee you they already get preferential treatment around campus.

It would just open up a whole lotta crap.

will not happen -
1.- cannot just pay football players
2.- who pays for unemployment insurance
3.- who pays for workmens's compensation
4. only a handful of universities are making money now & start paying & we will have many, many uno's

They already do get paid kind of. They get stipends. It just isn't much money. Because they aren't allowed to have jobs I think they should get the equivalent to ~30 hours of minimum wage work a week though.

athletes get a free education, which on average is worth around 125k + the value that it is worth after they graduate(if they graduate). Plus room and board and free meals. Plus travelling around the country for free and seeing new places. Plus girls all over the place. Cry me an effing river. I think athletes should be well accomodated. They should not have to be broke the entire time they are in college, and guess what, they're not.

No, but they should be able to profit on their name and likeness.

Well, that's what I thought, too. Emmert said back in Feb I think, no way, no how - not on his watch. But just last week, he conceded that maybe it is time to take a look at it but only in the form of a stipend. I could see helping the players out a bit since they are too busy to work but no way this would have any effect on the cheating. It would just up the ante.
I will see if I can find the link.

The only thing I can agree with is the jersey sales. Maybe they could set back a small portion of the sales and if that athlete graduates he will receive the money. If he doesn't, it's donated to a charity.

you want to know what we'll have to look at when they start playing college players? the freaking nfl. you throw money into the game, and you will see a dramatic decrease in the desire to win. lack in discipline and horrible records for every power house school. college is nothing but a try out for the nfl. college players have the determination to be noticed by scouts so they can play at the next level. that's why i believe they play better in college. and that's why i believe college football is better than the pros.

The only thing I have ever agreed with Rich Rod on was when he said on HBO that the scholarship should include a $300 or $400 a month stipend to allow the kids to travel home or have a little additional spending cash. These kids can't have jobs and deserve a little extra for what they do for the universities. At Bama assuming there are 200-250 scholarship athletes that would be about a million dollars out of the athletic budget a year.

The problem is not all schools have an extra million dollars to pay this. That is why it will never happen because the big boys could afford it, but not all schools could.

they are paid with college tuition, numerous contacts after college and carte blanche to come back and always be a part of the program

No, but I'd like to see a change in how people are able to use the player's image and likeness. Once a player has left school/graduated/exhausted their eligibility they should be able to recoup some money that is made off of products using their likeness. Video games, shirts, dvds etc.

Cheating is a main reason some people are bringing this subject up recently, but what they are missing is that paying players will not reduce the under the table stuff one bit.
