Hello, my friends, I am station in Japan and things are not looking to good over here right now, This site keeps us (SEC Fans) going when we are not home with our family and friends. Its been a blast, see ya.

Why do we have military stationed in Japan? (just curious)

Treaty obligation. During Cold War we ponied up to help Japan defend herself.
Convenient for us to have strategic bases that close to the Soviet Union. Drove the Russians batshit.
Mostly Air Force stationed there, though based on user name OP is most likely an Army dude.

We also have quite a bit of Navy and Marine Corps there as well when you take into account forces in Okinawa.
Garmish was spot-on with post-war commitments but I'll also mention that as a result of losing WWII, Japan is not allowed to have an "offensive" military capability which is why the Japanese military is called the Japan SELF DEFENSE Force (JSDF).
In essence, the U.S. is there to help protect Japan and provide that "offensive" capability if necessary (with our own interests in mind, of course).

we defend them in return for their agreeing to a very small army/air force/navy.
its an investment against their going apeshit again.
for example, now that nukes seem like a scary idea, and since Japan has little oil, if we were not sitting on top of them, they might decide to invade Indonesia and take oil.
