Alabama's Traditions

I just wanted to point out, as an Alabama student, some of the traditions I've noticed relating to football done by students, alumni, "sidewalk" fans, etc..

Feel free to add to my list.

Elephant Stomp- Band marches into the stadium. From reading some posts it apparently used to be more exciting than it is now.

Band on the Steps of Gorgas- Right before the Elephant Stomp the entire band sets up at one end of the quad and thousands of fans line up in a pep-rally of sorts. The cheerleaders and crimsonettes are also performing.

The Quad- Starting about 6 PM on Friday nights before game days people start setting up their tents on the quad. Many families pre game and post game on the quad, and many families have been doing so for generations. For most games there is not an empty space on the quad and many families choose to bring RV's or overflow to spots around the quad.

The Mound- this one isn't necessarily football related but fans do tailgate around the mound. For all you Auburn fans who think Toomer's trees are the first thing to ever exist in this state, the mound started forming in 1865 after the dorm built in 1833 was destroyed by a fire in the Civil War. There's also something called "Tapping the Mound" on Honors day that has been going on since the early 1900s.

Fraternities- For some of our Alumni, their fraternities or sororities are their traditions. Alabama has fraternities that date back to 1847, 1855, 1856 and so on. Many generations of members go to their houses to relive their past every game day.

Auburn and Alabama both have great traditions, that's to be expected from two great football programs with such dedicated fan bases. It's a terrible thing that happened to Toomer's corner but next year you guys can start a new tradition that people in 130 years will care about as much as you do about Toomer's.
