I've had the pleasure of knowing several Bama players (many of which are truely outstanding people) and hearing what they have to say about football in the 60s and 70s.

My question to the Bama posters: Do you believe Bear Bryant (or associated Bama boosters) cheated during his great run in the 60s and 70s? Not trying to pick a fight, just wondering where most Bama poster sit on this issue.

Bear was never caught or brought in front of the NCAA for cheating.

Let me try again: in your heart, do you believe he ran a completely clean program?

I think he bent several rules to the breaking point. I also think he knew his way around the rules. Did he cheat? Probably. But I do not believe when people say that he was the biggest cheater of all time.

There were less rules to break back then. Are you comparing todays rules and standards to what he did back then?

trying to find out what standards he's using. Many things Bear did back then wasn't cheating but would be in today's game.

It's easier to put it this way: Coach Bryant did the same kinds of things that everyone else did back then. He was just better at it.

And Alahunter, that's one thing a lot of people try to do...use todays rules to call him a cheater. Irritating

Yes, did he break the rules in place in the 60s and 70s?

There's your problem then. You can't go by the rules set today and compare them to when he coached. That's stupid and shows that you are indeed looking for an argument. I will say however, Bear never was caught paying a player, arranging a loan while in school or killed a player in practice.

I'm talking about NCAA rules from 1960-1980. I'm not talking about today's rules.

Bear was never as dirty as Dye. You can make assumptions all you want, feel free. But facts are facts. Auburn is the only school in the state to have had coaches proven to be dirty as hell.

I'm sure they were stretched as far as they could be.

settle down charlotte. What I believe or think is irrelevant, there's no proof provided to me that he did or didn't.

One of my grandfather's good friends played at Alabama in the late 50s/early 60s for Bear Bryant, and he has told me on numerous occasions that no one was ever paid or treated any differently than anyone else. He does say that if anyone on the team, and even former players, got in any kind of trouble, whether it be legal, personal, or whatever, that you just needed to call Coach Bryant and he would take care of it for you.

I would say that he wasn't a cheater so much as a man who took advantage of his significant influence.
