Auburn, coming off a decent 2009 season lost their flat-footed but somewhat effective QB Chris Todd. The cubbard was bare at that position, so AU pinned their hopes (and money) on troubled but talented transfer Cam Newton.

Ole Miss, coming off a decent 2009 season lost their over-hyped and somewhat effective QB Jevan Snead as a JR. The cubbard was pretty bare at that position, so Ole Miss pinned their hopes on troubled but talented transfer Jeremiah Masoli.

Both Newton and Masoli could run and pass with equal effectiveness. Masoli actually had the better pedigree in big time college football.

Auburn returned a very experienced offensive line and Ole Miss returned a very experienced defensive front. One possibly cancelling out the other, but that's not what happened. The Rebs D front disappointed, but the War Eagle OL seemingly got stronger and stronger as the season progressed. Nobody, not even the most red hot, bed-wetting War Eagle fan would have predicted the success of this year's Auburn squad. The difference...one player, one position, one worked, one did not. One made everyone on his team better, one did not. One made his coach look like a genius, one made his coach look like a bumbling 11th-hour opportunist.

The gamble that was paid off, has paid off...for now.

bullshite.

This infers that the problem with Ole Miss this past year was that Masoli was a bust.

And that's absolute bullshite. Our pass rush was the MAIN problem this year.

Masoli was the best player for Ole Miss this year.

Their defense was just that bad. Their special teams blew chunks as well.

No it infers that Auburn was lucky and Ole Miss was not. Masoli was not a bust, but he wasn't even close to Newton's dominance or his ability to rally his teammates. Auburn had a weak defense in 2009 and would have been just as weak or weaker if Masoli would have been their QB. A molehill becomes a mountain. A pre-season concern becomes an in-season weakness. In the SEC that weakness is magnified xfold. In my screwed up opinion, Ole Miss didn't handle adversity well this year because there was a considerable lack of character that infected the program. The decision to sign Masoli to begin with underscores the fact. Again, Auburn has reaped the benefits from the benefactor. It remains to be seen if what goes around, comes around.

Fans of other teams generally don't know nearly as much about a program as a fan of that program. You have shown, especially in this particular post, that you follow that generality.

Masoli was a leader on and off the field. So much, in fact, that he was almost voted Captain. He took the offense on his shoulders as much as he possibly could. The problem wasn't that he couldn't "lead" the offense. The problem was a considerable lack of talent in the WR and OL positions.

Cam Newton would have probably just gotten us to 6-7 wins.

Yes, but I had to ratchet it down a bit for my friends on the plains.

I watched ESPN 30/30 on the Pony Excess. What bothers me is that programs like SMU in the 80's along with most others in the SWC took down a good conference. What started out as a $100 handshake became an unbridled loss of control. Not going to get into that, but anything that threatens college football, the sport that I love, and the SEC bothers the hell out of me. Auburn seems to be getting away with paying a player's family for his services. Take em down, take em down hard and expose it for what it is.

Anyone who defends this has traveled through Cheatville, passed Zealot Town and is fast approaching the State of Dumbass.

He was a damn good player. I'm surprised an LSU fan would disagree after he dissected their defense all day long.

Who was he supposed to give it too?

The WR's? Melvin Harris was our best WR all year and I still have to convince myself that it's true.

It was him and Bolden on the offense and the majority of the other players were either scrubs or really young talent. If Masoli of this year were here either of the last two years or next year, we would have been a 9 win team at minimum.
