Was Foley's & Florida's first choice? What a reach.

I don't care what Foley's PR release said. You have a football program that has won 2 MNC in the last 5 years, and you hire a coordinator?

I'd like to see how some folks spin this and if they buy what Foley's selling. Also would like to know what really went down with Petrino, Mullen, and Stoops.

quote:

“Coach Muschamp is someone we targeted from the beginning and he is the guy we wanted,’’ Foley said. “He is the only person we met with and the only person we offered the job to.”

lawl at the first half of that...the 2nd part is probably true

Not me..Muschamp is unproven as a head coach see 5-10 Gene Chiz (granted it was ISU) but still he better bring together a great coaching staff.

I guess it depends on how you define "first choice." If it means, Muschamp was the first to accept an offer after other feelers came back negative then I guess so.

He wasn't the fans first choice that's for sure. He wasn't even on our radar.

We'll never know for sure whether he was Foley's first choice or not but it really doesn't matter at this point.

He's our coach whether he was first or last on the list.

Remember how 75000 people turned down USC before Pete Carroll decided to take the job in 2001? It worked out pretty well for them.

That's the key language. Todd Grantham was also "the only one" we offered the job to. Basically, there were discussions between a 3rd party between their other choices, whoever those may be, and when they turned Florida down and Muschamp accepted, he got the only "official" offer.

i think this was in the works for a while personally...stoops was never coming here, hes made that very clear...and meyer was against bringing in mullen as were a good portion of the uf boosters...this is not a panick hire...why would foley hire muschamp in 3 days if he didnt have it already predetermined...even if stoops petrino and mullen said no...there is still a laundry list of proven coaches out there both in the nfl and around the college landscape that we could have approached

because in a few weeks LSU may need a coach and we'd hire him, and UF wouldn't have it's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and now 5th option

Bad example. Pete Carroll was in the NFL for 16 years (5 as HC) before going to USC. Muschamp doesn't have that kind of resume.

Every head coach was a coordinator at some point. He was Texas's HCIW so it's not that much of a stretch.

Really? They weren't just born that way?

HCIW was a bunch of crap. Doesn't give him any actual HC experience. And it is a stretch to go from being a good DC to a top 5 college HC job...one that has won 2 MNC in 5 years.

Muschamp to a Moo State or Louisville type program I would believe. Right now, this looks like a reach.

Funny the only person they interview and the only person they want is always the one who takes the job.

I believe Petrino was courted early on as well as Mullen and Stoops. Was there any reports about Mullen or Stoops signing their contracts? If there was not then that leaves Petrino as the #1 target which is why the University of Arkansas locked him down with a Chasity belt type of contract. 18 million dollars is sending a message specifically to Florida. I love coach Petrino and he would have won several BCS Championships with Florida. That did not happen instead he will one with us in the next few years and then probably leave as the greatest coach right next to Broyles to ever have coached our Razorbacks.
