... without any finding that LSU knew or that there was a "lack of institutional control"?

That's what I seem to recall. I hear some insinuating that if an AU booster did pay the Newton's but the school didn't know about it that AU won't be in as much trouble. But it seems LSU basketball got SLAMMED by the NCAA even in light of no school knowledge/no lack of IC...

Of course that could have been because Dale Brown was at constant odds with the NCAA, had referred to them as the "Gestapo", etc. In fact, haven't many schools gotten off much lighter than LSU did for much more serious offenses?

Auburn has a very colorful history with respect to major NCAA violations, so there really isn't too much of a difference there.

He later admitted that he lied about it to get his transfer to Kansas approved.

Lester Earl apologized for it, but he screwed over Dale Brown and LSU.

"I was pressured into telling them SOMETHING. I was 19 years old at that time. The NCAA intimidated me, manipulated me into making up things, and basically encouraged me to lie, in order to be able to finish my playing career at Kansas. They told me if we don't find any dirt on Coach Brown you won't be allowed to play but one more year at Kansas. I caused great harm, heartache and difficulties for so many people. I feel sorriest for hurting Coach Brown. Coach Brown, I apologize to you for tarnishing your magnificent career at LSU."

I remember reading on the rant a couple years back that Lester Earl had come back to Baton Rouge for a funeral. While he was in town, he decided to write a letter of apology to Coach Brown and LSU over what he had done with the Kansas situation.

Since nobody from Auburn paid Newton it's not a big deal.

It's going to be interesting to see the response from SEC fans when they get egg on their face here in the near future.

A lot of old threads are going to be bumped from thread retirement land.

According to this 2008 article, he last played professional basketball in Spain in the 2003 season. His career was derailed by knee injuries.

There is another interesting quote from Dale Brown at the bottom.

Brown told the Advocate he held no ill will toward Earl.

"The most interesting journey that a person can make is discovering himself. I believe Lester has done that, and I forgive him," Brown told the paper.

The real villain in this story is Roy Williams, who apparently made illegal contact with Earl at a preseason tournament. Basically, it appears that Roy Williams recruited Earl after he was already an LSU player. That is illegal.

Roy probably encouraged Earl to play along with the NCAA, too.

Now let's see.....

Brown got screwed.
LSU got screwed.
Earl never made it at Kansas or in the NBA afterwards.

Roy Williams, on the other hand, who was the only person to commit any NCAA infractions, went on to win two championships with UNC.

He is to this day considered a "class act" and one of the best coaches in the game.

While I agree with the latter part, the former part is a bunch of bullshite. He is anything but classy. Roy Williams helped Lester Earl and the NCAA tank LSU basketball for more than a decade.

No cash ever was found to have changed hands. They did find there were improper benefits passed to his parent (mom). That's where the institutional control issue was supposedly "found." The sad thing is one of the guys allegedly implicated to have committed the violation was, and still is, a very respected Dr. here in Baton Rouge. Another was a restaurant owner who has since passed away.

The NCAA and Dale Brown had a very "checkered" relationship to put it mildly. He was quoted more than once referring to the Governing Board setting the guidelines as the "NCAA Gestapo," and still openly criticizes them at every opportunity. He often quotes a story of personally buying a plane ticket for one of his players so he would be able to attend the funeral of a close family member, a violation under the NCAA Guidelines at that time. He publicly announced this at one of his press conferences, and said something to effect of "...and I'd do it again, again, and again. The NCAA has no heart or compassion in their blood. To hell with them!." (not an exact quote, but you get the gist)

During the Earl investigation, there was one constant theme that was not widely known, and that was the dirty recruiting and instigation on the part of then Kansas head coach Roy Williams. LSU was invited to play in one of the Hawaii tourneys. Lester didn't show up at one of the team meetings, and Dale went looking for him. He went to Lester's room, knocked on the door while walking in found Roy there talking to Lester. It was short period later when the formal NCAA investigation began. Snitching by 'ol Roy Boy is what was thought to have given the NCAA the fuel needed to try to bring Dale down off his mountaintop.

Or so the story goes......... TIFWIW

What no one ever commented on is....After Earl turned on Dale Brown and before he was enrolled at KU, he was seen on national TV behind the bench of the Jayhawks in Lawrence....How did he get there? He was from very poor stock....How did he financially manage to get to that game? He is a traitor of the worst kind and will never be welcome in his hometown of Baton Rouge.
