State is having a good year this year and Ole Miss is bad......the last couple of years Ole Miss has been good and State bad.....I think State went to a bowl in 2007 and Ole Miss stayed home.....just seems like they can't both be good at the same time....what is the deal???

It could be because we are 2 of the smaller teams in the Strongest, Baddest arse conference in the World. If Mississippi had one main school like LSU or Arkansas, ect... then I would think they would be very competitve most years but its tough to compete with MSU and Ole Miss and Southern Miss for that matter every year when they are all going after the same players.

I wondered the same thing about UA & AU for years. A lot of stars have to align for it to happen though.

It's very possible that AU could have a season just like Bama did last year. Heisman winner, BCSNC winner - IMO it would speak volumes for the state of Alabama.

Besides 05 and this year how many times since the 80s have both teams played as highly ranked teams? 93, 94... Not many.

We have 3 D1 schools. Three HBCU schools and a bunch of Community Colleges sporting one of the best football states for JC ball in the country. One of the three D1 schools usually dominates recruiting for several years in a row and usually only one of the 3 has it going with a stable coach and coaching staff at a time. It basically comes down to coaching and a limited number of "D1 quality" players in the state. Plus, Alabama and LSU often rob us of some of our best players.

FWIW it was 1999 the last time that State and Ole Miss both finished ranked. Southern Miss was also ranked that year.

LINK

State 10-2 ranked 13th
Southern Miss 9-3 ranked 14th
Ole Miss 8-4 ranked 22nd

Apparently you weren't alive in the 90's when State, Ole miss, and Southern Miss were doing pretty good.

***good call 601, should have read the whole thread.

Because they have to share the Mississippi recruits after the rest of the SEC has cherry picked.

Last year only 2 of Mississippi's top 20 recruits went out of State, and 11 of the dandy dozen either signed with State or Ole Miss.

What volumes would it speak, exactly? That your schools care a lot and have a lot of money to throw around, I suppose. But it's not like Nick Saban, Mark Ingram, Guz Malzhan, and Cam Newton are all Alabamans (is that the word?).
