The ridiculous sequence of events at the end of the SC/Kent is as bad as anything Les Miles has ever done, and Spurrier lost! Miles, however, gets skewered nationally but virtually nothing is said about Spurrier's idiotic game management. It's annoying. (For that matter, has Miles ever potentially bungled anything as bad as Mack Brown in a championship game-last year's big 12 title game-when a second had to be put back on the clock so they could kick the winning field goal?)

FALSE. He had enough time on the clock to take a shot at the endzone, and if it didn't work kick the FG. Now...it was predictable, and didn't go to their best WR, and it was picked...but it was understandable. It was a good train of thought executed poorly.

Miles, on the other hand....where to start? There have been SEVERAL, not an abberation, but numerous times where it appears the man has no concept of the clock at all. Just completely oblivious to what is going on in the game. That's why there's a difference.

Are you forgetting that he called his last time out when, given the time left and the downs left, all he had to do was spike the ball to stop the clock? (The announcers made a big deal out of this.) Then, a relatively short field goal gets them into overtime yet he chose to throw it in the endzone and, because of poor execution, it was intercepted. Game over.

I agree... He took a shot to win the game, and it failed. But it wasn't a horrible decision, nor was it clock mismangement.

Miles speaks like his speech batteries are going dead. Spurrier talks his arse off and says nothing. And you are right. Why not rake his arse over the coals.

I think Spurrier got a pass because they lost.

What infuriates most SEC observers is that most of the time, when Les does something brain-dead stupid, LSU still manages to win.

Which given the likely-hood of a tie with a chip-shot FG was poor coaching coming out of a time-out. I could understand the play going down that way if the play was called from the sideline and the coach didn't have a chance to talk it over with the QB. However, coming out of a timeout, Spurrier should have given Garcia specific instructions to throw it away if it was not there and give them a shot of playing for the win in overtime when the clock was no longer an issue and everyone in the stadium didn't know what was coming.

He took the timeout to stop the clock and set up the pass attempt to the endzone.

What difference does it make if that occurs before or after spiking the ball?

The only benefit of saving the TO is that you have more time to set up a possible game-tying kick. But since the pass on the play before was intercepted, they never got the chance.

So looking back with hindsight, the best decision WAS to go ahead and take the timeout.

he didn't vs ole miss. He is now like the town stray dog. Everyone just kicks him when he goes by. Meanwhile every win is like lifting his leg on a fire hydrant.

Actually the clock was not running when he called timeout. At the time, I thought it was a wasted timeout but I can understand wanting to make sure your QB understands the situation. That's why I scratch my head at Garcia just throwing it up for grabs with the WR well covered right after talking the play over with Spurrier.

This. I think SOS told Garcia "If its not there, just throw it away and we'll kick the FG and win it in overtime."

Probably had a sinking feeling while he was saying it.

Spurrier never picked his nose and flicked a booger during an interview.

Exactly. Garcia underthrew the pass. Basically, Spurrier told him to throw it to the back right corner of the end-zone, and SG underthrew it. I was pissed when it happened, but it made more sense once I cooled down and thought about it. Loss still pisses me off like no other. College football season is such and emotional roller coaster.

Spurrier tried to pull a Miles ala Auburn 07 and he failed. Simple as that.

I guess "going for the win" is a theme this year. Michigan State did it, too, with that fake fg. Hell, even Saban tried a fake.

He probably did. The coach can't stop Garcia from throwing the ball out there. It was not a terrible call to go for the win. Garcia screwed up.
