once again
A fumble in American and Canadian football occurs when a player, who has possession and control of the ball loses it. By rule, it is any act other than passing, kicking or successful handing that results in loss of player possession.
Yup. Which is why I wanted someone to look up the rule book definition.
A lateral being a backwards pass means that it's not considered a fumble. Fwiw, a snap from center to QB is also considered a backward pass and is the reason anyone can pick it up and run it on 4th downs.

It's considered a handoff.
Unless it hits the ground.

I'm waiting for proof that a lateral that hits the ground is not a fumble.
I'd appreciate it if you'd link me.

A loose ball. not to be synonymous with a "fumble" .

I can't believe that people are actually arguing that a lateral that hits the ground is not a fumble.
Posted on 10/10/10 at 12:21 am to inelishaitrust
the play was a lateral and lateral to the line of scrimmage. First down.

Link? I would call the act a throwing motion that is either to the horizontal or to the rear which is a backward pass.

Not to mention that it clearly went forwards a few inches.
