Why is ESPN saying that the SEC is having a down year?

Bama, Gators, Hogs, AU, LSU, S.Car are all ranked in the top 20. WTF...

I don't know. Florida is weaker than they have been the last few years, and Georgia is not as good as they have been, but LSU, USC, Auburn, and Arkansas are all better than they were last year.

Because they can't point to the Alabama-Florida game as a top 5 matchup because Florida is struggling. It is all about what they can hype and right now, they don't see the top matchups to hype, even though the SEC is solid all throughout.
They want mega games.
I still think they might get a few.

The SEC is not having a down year. I think there is a perception that we are though because the "name" teams of the SEC like Tennessee, LSU, Florida and Georgia do not look as good as the country expects them to be.

I think you're exactly right, Monticello.
However, i don't see this many SEC teams staying this highly ranked.
We know at least two teams will drop this week, having Bama play Arky, and Auburn play USCe.

Because they're too lazy to consider that maybe the pecking order in the league changes from year to year. In their minds it's the names of the schools rather than the teams themselves that make the SEC what it is.

That's true, but it will all fall apart soon enough. For instance, the SEC only has 11 teams in the top 32 ranked recruiting classes of 2011 so far: LINK.

Here's what I think of ESPN:

maybe the rest of the country isnt very good..they have 3 weak teams in the top 15 (Utah, Boise, and TCU)

Arkansas, South Carolina, and Kentucky are having great starts, but they're hardly as marketable as Georgia and Tennessee being good.

I think TCU looks pretty freaking good this year. Boise - meh. I don't know enough about Utah to comment.

I would say that most of the teams have not looked as good as "expected". Georgia is not playing too well. We have definitely not played up to the level that we were suppose to be. Florida is struggling. Tennessee....well..... even LSU is not playing as well as some thought. I don't think its more of a down year, just people hyped us too much.

There is definitely s certain SEC school that legitimized that program in the media's eyes.

Utah was the orignial "BCS buster". And they got to a BCS bowl under the old system.

Lots of balance at the top = down in their eyes. Or maybe it's because we have 4 teams that could win it all under the right circumstances this year rather than 6 or 7.

My thoughts exactly...LSU looks just as strong as anyone else. Their D looks solid, their Special Teams are solid, they're moving the ball well enough. They're not overrated like Arkansas.

you left out Auburn...you know, the winner of the SEC West

USC, Texas and OU aren't exactly lighting up the scoreboards either.

This may be the case for Florida and Georgia, but Tennessee and LSU were both expected by most of the talking heads to be well below average this year.
