Compensation for College Athletes

Anyone that thinks athletes don't get "compensated" for their play need to read this...
quote:

The average spending per athlete at schools in each major conference ranges from 4 to nearly 11 times more than the average spending on education-related activities per student. The SEC leads the way, spending $144,592 per athlete in 2008

Yeah but a little change so they can go on a date would be nice. I say give each player about $500 a month so they can enjoy some little things. But all compensation should be uniform throughout the nation.

chartered flights to and from games
hotels
uniforms
private tutors because they're kept from classes multiple days a week
etc., etc.

none of that is cash in the pockets of the athlets; it all goes towards making more money for the school. i'm sure the athletes get more than the non-athlete, but to act like all that "spending" somehow is = to "compensation" is ridiculous.

Using walk ons as an example is patently ridiculous. They chose to try out. Period.

I'm sorry, those guys get a free education, plus housing, books, and extra benefits like a tutor provided by the athletic department. They get to travel on the school's dime, get hero worshipped, and featured on television.

By playing football, they get the opportunity to go into a "job" that pays millions and millions of dollars.

I spent 10 years after graduation paying back student loans because I chose to go out of state for school. My decision so I had to deal with the consequences.

How about I think that any knucklehead that takes their scholarship for granted and gets booted for criminal conduct or flunks out has to pay back all that was given to him.

Then maybe people like Jimmie Johns or Ryan Periloux would think twice before being an idiot.

Not to mention they get snatch lining up for them, even if they're ugly. Also probably don't have to pay for many drinks if they're good.

no but he said he thinks they should be compensated and I think D3 players and walk-on's should be first.

true but is it right that they have to choose between a job (what they have to do) or play football (what they wanna do)?

Why in the hell should walk ons be compensated?

They CHOOSE to try out for the team - they are not recruited, they have no scholarship.

I don't even know, but I would think they don't have the same restrictions on them that scholarship athletes do.

Scholarship athletes :: Walk on as Academic scholarshipped students :: Regular students.

Giving walk ons compensation is a totally ridiculous idea.

they don't get school payed for. But because they play sports they can't get a job. They have to choose between playin football and getting a job.

So what?

When grown ups make a decision they have to live with the consequences.

They chose football, so therefore they know they can't get a job and they better figure out how that will work. They know that going in.

I chose to go out of state for school and knew the financial consequences. I weighed the pros and cons and made my choice.

If a student chooses to try out for cheerleader or the band, they know they are going to be limited in their employment choices. Are we going to give them money, too? Or how about a student choosing to work on the school newspaper? Or a student who runs for SGA president?

that's a good point. It would be hard to draw the line.

I agree. I imagine that many could use some money for clothing and basic personal items like haircuts, grooming items, etc.

I agree with BamaChick on this. Saying that it's not fair that they can't get a job doesn't make sense to me. It's like saying it's not fair to me that I have to work, what I have to do, instead of playing golf and drinking beer, what I want to do.
