This is my first post here on the Rant, and I'll try to make it a decent one.

My question is, do you pull for your team out of pride for the state they represent, or for the school? And did you actually attend the school in question?

To answer my own question, it is most definitely state pride for me. I did attend Alabama, but my love for the football team was established well before that.

State Pride, because we all know that Mississippi State IS the STATE univeristy here in Mississippi.

Honestly, it's both.

I am very proud to be from Tennessee. I love my state.

But I'm also very proud of my school and proud that I have a degree from UT.

My father started taking me to Ole Miss games in the mid-60's when I was 8 years old and we had season tickets and went to almost every game when I was a kid.

At that time--the height of the Vaught era, just about everybody in Mississippi who was not an MSU alum (and even some who were) was an Ole Miss fan, just as everybody who lived in Alabama and was not an Auburn alum was a Bama fan.

When it came time to go to college, I got a scholarship offer from a prestigious private school in a big city in another part of the country, so I took it....and then went to grad school in the Ivy League, so I ended up never having attended Ole Miss, but have always been a fan, particularly since neither of the schools I actually attended competes in Division 1A.

I contemplated switching allegiance over the years, but my heart would not let me do what my head told me would be a good idea......so here I am, still

I grew up an Alabama fan. I went to college at UAB but have always been a BAMA fan.

I can remember Alabama football always being a huge part of our life even since I was a child. Saturday's during football season always revolved around Alabama and if they were on TV it was a big deal to get to watch the game.

We usually went to the games at legion field. I remember standing by the fence as a little boy and waiting for coach Bryant to come out of the tunnel. I thought he was some kind of god when I was a kid. He looked like a giant to me.

Those were some good times.

I contend north LA and south LA are two completely different worlds.

And what every Bama fan has always suspected about Auburn folk is proven to be true.

Well, to be fair, how would you feel about a state in which the entire population other than Auburn alumni and their families hates your guts?

School pride.

I'm not from Kentucky. I'm from Virginia and want to live in New York in the near future, so state pride is not a factor at all.

Lolocaust!

It doesn't surprise me that state is to you, the representation of what Mississippi is about.

Ole Miss is too refined, too nice, too affluent, too cosmopolitan to be Mississippi.

That attitude has done as much damage to our in-state recruiting efforts over the years as anything else I can think of......

First Welcome My Brother!
Great first post.

I never went to UA but have a couple relatives that did. Just a long long time Bama Fan. Us against The Barn? Recruiting is the main reason. Whoever wins the Iron Bowl usually gets to "Cherry Pick" the available state recruits. The Hate is because of long time family allegance to either program.

Do you have 15 more Alabama friends who'd like to come on here? Our Sec brethren here are complaining we Bama Fans aren't really have enough posters here now (Cough Cough) so do invite more! RTR.

I know you weren't directing this towards me, but I just want to put it out there that I never said you were an Alabamian. My head shake was derived from your blanket statement. Cali is a good place to be from, and you should be proud of it.
