"One popular thought after Florida coach Urban Meyer signed his six-year, $24 million deal is that the Meyer-to-Notre Dame talk could be silenced through 2014.
Uh, no.
It's Meyer who revs up the talk - "My dream job,'' he's called Notre Dame. What's noteworthy is he said it last December just as contract negotiations with Florida were hitting a crucial stage. Then, when the deal was smoothed out this summer, he said the Notre Dame idea was dead. Convenient how that worked for him.
But here's why it isn't dead: The buyout in Meyer's clause is only $500,000. Even by buyout standards, that's little. It wouldn't even be a speed bump for Notre Dame, considering right now it's paying Charlie Weis $4.2 million a year.
So, sure, Florida got Meyer to sign a long-term deal.
But Meyer also has a convenient escape hatch if he wants it."

Charlie Weiss appears to have failed as head coach at Notre Dame... but he succeeded brilliantly in milking them for massive sums of money
In his first year there they get so worried they might lose him to another program that they signed him to a massive ten year deal

it's not the 500k that's the nut, it's the weiss buyout. i've heard (not substanciated)that its huge, over 20 mil. i find that hard to believe though, but they did a 10 yr deal a coupla yrs ago (i find that hard to believe too; ah, the stupidity of it all)

What's to gain by going to ND from FU? A softening schedule is really the only thing I can think of. Notre Dame's fans have the same expectations as the most delusional SEC fans (i.e. win every game, compete for the MNC every year...etc), yet ND is no longer in a position to make that a reality for them. So, that program is a neverending cycle of failed coaches spinning past TD Jesus.
They can no longer recruit like the power players of today. They get their share of 5*s but not enough to make them relevant and keep them there long-term. There is now a whole generation of players and recruits who don't remember ND when it was a power. They were raised on USC, OU, FU, Texas, LSU, and Ohio State. Chances are, if they want to put on green and gold, they will more likely make their way to Oregon for the cool Nike unis, rather than seek out South Bend.
Meyer would be going from a place where recruiting and winning is much simpler, to a place where it has become next to impossible.
The only other intangible ND has over FU is that the pollsters and douches at ESPN still remember ND as THE football powerhouse, and they are eager to reward even the slightest successes with an overabundance of praise, and move them to ridiculously undeserved heights in the polls.

He has a small buyout because our AD, Foley, hates to do buyouts. He feels if the coach doesn't want to be here, then they should be able to leave. That's all it means. And it's been discussed before.

quote:You must not pay much attention to recruiting. As bad as ND is, they still bring in top level recruits. Get the program consistantly in the top 10 and it will have top 3 recruiting classes on its own.

As part of the ND haters club, I agree that I would never want to coach there. But the reason there is a ND haters club is because...well, they are Notre Dame.

I really hate Charlie Weiss for being such a shitty coach. It's that fatasses fault that we have to go through the Urban Meyer to Notre Dame BS every year.
I honestly don't think Meyer is gonna go, but I just get sick of hearing it and it causes a distraction for him and our team.
frick you Weiss!!!!

All UF fans know that Meyer wont be going there anytime soon....So we'll just sit back and watch as everyone else hopes and prays that he does...
