I don't think so. Bryant and McKay were good friends and had discussed playing for years. Keep in mind Alabama was coming off a very mediocre 6-5 '69 season with their defense giving up 49 and 47 pts in their last two games.
There has been a literary cottage industry about that 1970 game. Lots of 'fish tales' in that game.Nonetheless,it was a big deal and did open some eyes, even though Alabama had some blacks ready for the varsity in '71. Here is a pretty good book on the game:

bayou2003 I have heard people say that several times. I don't want to believe that he would throw a game, but it wouldn't shock me either . If he did, then he did it for a good reason.

A strong rumor that goes way back is that Bryant enjoyed a lot of "Jungle Love". So no, I don't think so.

quote:The way I heard the story, once Cunningham ran over, through and around the Alabama defense, Bryant told his assistants to "go get me one of those (recruit) or you are all fired". They went and got him a couple of those.

I think Bear would sign Al-Queda if it helped him win a game.

By today's standards, he most certainly was a racist. In his time though, he wasn't.

Thank You, and USC was the other most important figure in integrating Southern football.
jeez, Bama uses this bs legend to prop itself up worse than LSU used Katrina. Integration was coming real soon, regardless of that game. Maybe it got those hicks in Tuscaloosa to think about recruiting black players, but the rest of the nation, and the south could see it coming without that stupid game.

but, Alabama put it on television for all the world to see. I think there were several other schools in the SEC that were already integrated when that game occured. I think Kentucky was the first SEC school to have a black player and I think we had a freshmen that was black but back then the freshmen squad and the Varsity squad were seperate.
I-59 will know what Southern team was the first to integrate.

First SEC was UK. I know Bear tried to recruit Cecil "P-nut" Blackman from Foley in 1970. No pun intended on the name. I just realized that But P-nut blew out his right knee in the conf title game here.
