I have heard he was, but that doesn't make sense because Croom speaks so highly of him. They certainly make him out to be a racist in that movie Mississippi Burning with that joke they tell about the colored boy who wanted to play for Bear Bryant. So was he racist towards African-Americans?

Yeah I guess your right.
What is that face doing in first reply to this? It looks like he has his eyes covered up then does a Hitler salute.

Have you ever heard a black person say anything other than good things about the bear? If you're gonna title your thread that way, then start off with a couple of known facts.

Bear Bryant was one of the most important figures in integrating southern football.

No I never have never heard any blacks talk bad about the Bear. Thats why that joke in Mississippi Burning threw me off.

Well then don't go asking if Bryant was racist, he helped out more ppl than we'll ever help.

Just because I have never personally heard a black person talk bad about Bear Bryant doesn't mean he was not a racist. I heard he was, I didn't think he was, so I asked if he was, and now I know he wasn't.

Watch Breaking The Huddle on HBO, it shows the racism on the campus and how Coach Bryant helped bring intergration into southern college football.

Search about the 1970 game between Bama and USC. Bryant invited USC, an integrated team, to play in birmingham knowing that it would help push along his effort to get the Alabama administration to let him integrate the team.

RGCjr01, I hope you didn't take my first post the wrong way or anything. I was just a little irritated because I hear people say stuff like that all the time. And I couldn't tell if you were serious or not. Cut me some slack. I haven't slept much this past month

usc6158, have you seen the interview of the asst. coach that watched Coaches McKay and Bryant make the deal on the 1970 game? Check it out on the 3:50 mark. LINK That guy must have it down to an art.

Bear Bryant was the man. He sent players to opposing schools because he knew they would excel there. He was way ahead of most went it came to integration.

Bear's desire to win outweighed his racism. And that is all that matters really.

Was he a racist? Smart money says... probably not any more than every other white male in the South during integration.
