Anyone know what happened this past Sunday? Nicholls forfeited, but it says on their website it was due to inclement weather. However, State's website says the weather was fine and their players were ready to play. Anyone know the details?

Weird.

thats interesting.....my first guess is that the Nicholls coach got pissed about the way something went down Saturday and refused to play Sunday

however, there was a front that came through so the weather really could have been inclement

During the baseball game yesterday they said it along with several other SEC games were cancelled because of snow.

Yes but the Miss State article says otherwise. Plus, if the game was canceled, it wouldn't be a forfeit to State and a 9-0 scoreline recorded.

Cohen said he wasn't going to throw anyone under the bus but it was fine to play. They had an intrasquad. I think the coaches got into an arguement Saturday and Durham had enough. Cohen said he fine with calling it a forfiet.

From the SE Baseball website:

quote:

"We met at 11 am, the same time their team was supposed to take the tarp off," Durham said in an email. "There was still snow on areas in the outfield on top of the five inches of rain that we got Friday, which made it very saturated. They couldn't take the tarp off at that time because of the ice and snow still on the tarp. The umpires that we had on Saturday's doubleheader were from Birmingham and would not come because of iced bridges, so John was going to have to get some local umpires. I was not going to risk injuries for our team with conference starting next weekend just because John wanted to play. If they played an intrasquad game, that's great for them. I hope they got better doing it and nobody got hurt, but they weren't going to do it at the expense of risking injuries to our team. We did not forfeit, I canceled the game because their field was not in safe playing conditions due to recent bad weather."

The weather was not the issue, it was much nicer than saturday when they PLAYED a DH. Hell our players even played an intersquad after the pussy,s left. I watched the intersquad and the field was in fine shape and there was not a cloud in the sky. This was one of the pussiest movies Ive have ever seen. This team actually got on a bus and left 2 and a half hours before the start time. Im sure this coach will lose alot of respect over this act of cowardness.

So wait, does it count as a win for Miss St. and a loss for Nicholls? Or is it not counted?

It sounds like it goes down as a no contest if no umpires showed.

Sorry no Link, this is from the Premium board of a Mississippi State site and it would not work. So I copied it.

A series in which Mississippi State had taken a pair of wins, defeating the Colonels 10-8 and 6-3 in a Saturday twinbill forced by torrential Friday rains. While those games weren’t played in pleasant conditions by any means, the Dudy Noble Field surface held up well and was not a significant factor for either side. So even after an overnight fall of snow left the field covered, there was no reason to expect Sunday’s third contest would not go off as contracted.
But when the coaches met around 11:00 a.m., Nicholls State skipper Chip Durham apparently had already made up his mind. Despite assurances from State coaching, administrative, and grounds crew staff the field would be fine, NSU chose to leave. Their school’s sports website called it a cancellation, stating “Field and weather conditions caused coaches and officials to make the decision to cancel the final game of the three-game series.”

Which was not at all what anyone from State had said, and MSU responded with a release calling it a forfeit by Nicholls. This indeed is what a Southeastern Conference official told media relations director Joe Dier, that MSU can count this as a forfeit win. Though how the 9-0 final score will be factored into computerized season statistics is an interesting technical challenge.

Not that Cohen cared about any numbers. He was frustrated that a game-day was being wasted, especially after the efforts to get Saturday’s double-header in. “You know what? I think today in a lot of respects is better than yesterday,” he said. And after several seasons shoveling real snow off Kentucky’s field, to have a non-conference guest simply go home and then miss-state the situation rankled all the more.

“Unfortunately we’re not going to play and it has nothing to do with the weather. And it’s really bothersome to me and our kids who wanted to play. You work really hard for a long period of time to get the opportunity to play, and when the opportunity provides itself you’ve got to play. Unfortunately it didn’t happen today and that was beyond our
