Auburn is getting a bum rap on coach hire

We could have gone in a new direction. We could have given an opportunity...for both Auburn and Turner Gill.

From Phillip Marshall...

Auburn is getting a bum rap on coach hire

I remember sitting at my kitchen table as a 13-year-old in Birmingham in 1963 and seeing my father shed very real tears for four little African-American girls who died at the hands of unspeakable evil when the 16th Street Baptist Church was bombed.

I remember, as a junior high school student, being taunted and even spat upon because I said I thought it was right that African-American kids should be able to go to our schools and our parks and eat in our restaurants.

I believe it is appalling that, considering who plays the game, only four out of 119 Division I-A college head football coaches are African-Americans.

We all have prejudices, but race has never been one of mine. Not even for a day. I credit my father for raising me that way. I say those things so that what I’m about to say won’t be misinterpreted.

Auburn is getting a bum rap.

It is getting a bum rap from one of its own former basketball stars, Charles Barkley. It is getting a bum rap from national columnists and reporters who hurl ugly charges without a shred of evidence, showing their own prejudices. It is even getting a bum rap from some of its own supporters.

Auburn could have made a statement by hiring Buffalo’s Turner Gill, an African-American, to be its head football coach. That would have been a good thing. But athletics director Jay Jacobs and those who helped him in his search decided instead to hire Gene Chizik, a good man and a good coach. He has enthusiastic support from many African-American young men who played for him.

There’s plenty of room for disagreement over whether that was the right choice. But there is no evidence that Auburn made its decision based on race.

Why were Tennessee, Syracuse and Clemson not ripped to shreds for not hiring African-Americans? Where was the outcry when Nebraska, Gill’s own alma mater, passed over him last season?

Auburn had serious interviews with two African-American candidates – Gill and Rodney Garner. That, in itself, is more than most schools do. So now Auburn is racist because it didn’t hire one of them? Yet, the other 115 schools that have white coaches aren’t?

Someone needs to explain that to me.

Gill finished second in Auburn’s deliberations. Some believe he should have been first. And there’s nothing wrong with that feeling. Some believe Auburn wasted an opportunity. And there’s nothing wrong with that feeling either.

But the sad thing is that Auburn, as it turns out, would have been better off if it had not interviewed Gill at all.

imo its getting retarded. aubarn should be ripped on for hiring gene but not because gill is black but bc gill was a way better hire. gill has won more games this year than gene did in 2 years.

he hadn't shown enough yet. also bo was widely considered one of the top assistants that was going to get a shot at being a head coach.

The Black Coaches Association gave Ole Miss an F for hiring Nutt.

imo the bca makes it harder for a black coach to get a fair shake at a job.

Me too. Houston Nutt is the best hire that Ole Miss has ever made.

he was a good hire for ole miss. I don't think nutt would be a good hire at a school that is winning more. At ole miss after the o years getting to a bowl is a big thing. He should be able to get ole miss to a bowl game most years if he stays for a while.

They get the rap cause other schools hired candidates that if there were no race, would be easily defensible choices.

AU hired a guy who NO ONE thinks was the better choice.

There is NEVER "evidence" for racism cause we can't read minds. But, I can guaranfrickintee you that if you hired a black guy with Chizic's resume over a white guy with Gill's resume, the shite storm about Affirmative Action would be huge!!!

Phillip Marshall is a total 100% horse's behind. With that said,he's dead on. Sadly,in the media whether it be print ,radio or television there is no bigger cottage industry than crying "racism" especially when it involves the South.

Lets suppose Turner Gill was Caucasian. Would an 8-5 record at Buffalo have ESPN and West Coast sports writers protraying him as such a 'rising star' ? I doubt it.

Honestly, the more curious position of lack of minorities is at the coordinator level. There is ,IMO,a too small number there.

I don't hold that(racism) against Auburn. They can hire who they want. I just think that Chizik guy was probably the poorest choice. Forget the white and black factor. That doesn't concern me at all.

I doubt any of the I-AA teams with coaching openings were interested in that guy. This coaching choice is that f^&%^king bad. Sorry Auburn fans.

I totally agree with Marshall's article.

Also, no one can say that Auburn didn't hire Gil based on the fact that his record was better than Chizik's and they still overlooked him (because of race). Auburn interviewed some white candidates that also had better records than Chizik and they didn't pick any of them either. In fact everyone they interviewed had a better record than Chizik. So Auburn's decision really can't be characterized as racist. However, there is one thing the hire can definitely be classified as....incredibly stupid.

I think we will definitely know if that is true (or not) this time next year

(and no...I don't agree with this hire)

True. I guess at the moment I'm really thinking of this from a PR perspective. From that perspective, it was incredibly stupid and Auburn's AD is a laughing stock in the national media. Interestingly, we were a laughing stock when we hired Saban. Everyone ridiculed us for that one. Look how that turned out. So you never know, but I would have bet money that the ridicule that bama underwent was going to go away... a lot of money. No way I'm putting money on Chizik righting the ship. No freaking way.

Bottom line. I doubt AU interviews a black coach if Chizik does not work out.

I can handle losing if we are trying to smashmouth and get out manned. I hate losing trying to be cute running the spread.
