Wall Street Journal

Could not find this on search, but would be interested in the discussion / reaction it generates.

Enjoy.

quote:

In recent years, the South has undergone rapid growth. Twenty-seven of the 50 fastest-growing metropolitan regions in the country in 2007 were in the South, while personal-income growth in the region outpaced the national average over the past decade.

This part is spot on. Why? Well for an example,,Huntsville, Alabama (aka The Rocket City AND the birthplace of NASA- Houston, the Cape, etcc.. are spin-offs from Marshall Space Flight Center on Redstone Arsenal) boasts the 2nd LARGEST RESEARCH PARK in the United States.

What I would wonder about would be this:

Clearly, those of us who have grown up in the South have seen the changes -- who can say that Birmingham, Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, even Baton Rouge and Gainesville, look like they did in the 1970's -- but I would wonder if any of the transplants who have come have gotten caught up in the insanity surrounding SEC football? Are they part of the source of the new dollars -- or do the new dollars come from building them new roads, homes, schools, etc..? If I were an AD I would want to know. Also, if I were the chancellor at LSU or one of the other schools were athletic fundraising outraces endowment giving, I would want to know why, too.

All in all an interesting read -- one every SEC fan ought to be aware of. Is it possible that we are not just playing football?
