I overheard a co-worker saying this at work yesterday. I asked him what he was talking about and he said that it wasn't fair that you should have to play a divison championship game and then be ranked for the national championship. He said that he thinks that your end of the season ranking should be what sends you to NC game. I said that it does. Your division championship game is PART of your season. He said no, regular season should be all that counts, because Alabama is undefeated in the regular season and is #1 and should play for the NC based on that. I asked him why this concern....was he AFRAID Alabama was going to lose to Florida. He said NOOOO....we will beat them by at least 3 touchdowns!!!!

Convenient logic.

That used to be the rule when they won their 80 somewhat NCs.

I kid.

Can a Championship game hurt a team, yes, see UT-Vols in 2001. They were ranked #2 on their way to the Rose Bowl (NC Game) and LSU whooped um' 31-20.

That being said, if Bama really thinks they are the best team, then they should have no problem prooving that they are at least the best in the SEC.

It won't happen but an arguement could be made Bama deserves a place in the NC game even with a close loss to Florida today. One loss is one loss and Bama would be in the same position as everyone else.

This will be a close game with UF prevailing, but 3 TD's more by Bama.

didn't the tweaking after OU dropped their ACCCG in '03 pretty much stop that from happening again? I.e. that much of a late season loss?

No, it couldn't. If Florida wins close, then Florida will have lost one game, by one point, and Alabama will have lost to Florida. You can't lock out an OU or UT who also have only one loss, or God forbid, USC, none of whom have had a shot at Florida.

Maybe...But it is a known fact that when it comes to rankings, it is better to lose early in the season than to lose late.

And what about Texas Tech. They did beat Texas and only have one loss and yet they're completely out of the conversation. Texas says they're being screwed because they beat OU but TT has the same argument regarding Texas.

Alabama absolutely should have to play Florida to prove they are the best team in the SEC. I can understand his logic only if Bama already beat UF in the "regular season".

If Bama is truly the top team in the SEC they'll handle UF. If not, UF goes to championship game and deservingly so.

Texas, TT, and OU have all beaten each other up. Alabama hasn't played a team near that good until today

they haven't earned anything yet
they haven't beaten a good team yet(MAYBE ole miss)

But with zero quality wins. Their only wins over top 25 teams are Georgia and Ole Miss, and neither of them is ranked anywhere close to the teams that the other contenders will have beaten.
