Well, they definitely didn't blossom into studs who were consistent. I tell you a conversation I'd like to have and that's with somebody like Cody Prewitt or Senquez Golson to get their take on what they see going on with the secondary. You know, somebody who's recently been behind the lines with Ole Miss and could give a real good analysis of what they see and don't see. There's more to this whole story this season we may never know. It might not be anything earth shattering in the least, but I don't know if the truth has yet been located.

While I agree not many of our defensive players would start as they are right now, but players like CJ Hampton and Tony Bridges were very highly recruited. Bridges was the #1 Juco player in the country. Don't you find it odd that these talented guys have not developed at all under our coaching.

Some guys are just busts. Happens at Bama, LSU, Ohio State - everywhere. I think it's just magnified for Ole Miss since we are more reliant on these types of players panning out.

Bama signs 20 4-stars or better per year, 8-10 of them don't work out, but it's not a big deal bc there's 10 other dudes. They have multiple 5-stars that only play special teams for them

Somehow or another we better get our asses on the recruiting trail, pick up guys who will commit and stick with us and learn to develop them better and coach them to be where they are supposed to be.

Yeah this class is looking horrible now, but if they sign Cam Akers and a few other Top 250 guys, it could be salvageable. They need to sign around 5 or 6 LBs. I think Gay may come back too.

I actually think we cut Bryon Jones for bigger fish. Could be wrong tho.

Not happening. Even so, we still only get offensive bluechips. We need to get a DC who can recruit now, or else the loss in recruiting this year will set us back for the next 4.

You are wrong.
Bryan jones is a stud and has been tearing it up this year if you had seen or read his stats you would know that he is a take.
Also that LSU is his dream school. And that they just offered and he will be going there.

Cut Bryan jones

Yeah I'd love nothing more than to get Akers but that's more offensive tools (which don't get me wrong, we NEED backs) when the main area we should focus on is defense

I was forunate enough to have that conversation last year while Cody was rehabing.....and quite frankly it has only gotten worse than what he thought last year.

Kind of off topic, but this is very true. After the big class of Laquon, Nkem, Tunsil, etc we were lured into believing every single one of our top recruits would pan out. That's just not the case and damn near impossible. I had a discussion with an intelligent Bama fan I do business with (a true rarity) after the draft, and we went and looked back at Bama's classes over the past few years and did a "Where are they now" analysis. Let's just say the odds of having all of our bluechips pan out like they did that year was equivalent to hitting the lottery. We all need to accept that was a one time deal, and we're going to have more busts than not going forward. That's why we can't rely on a handful of kids to make our team or class and need more depth everywhere, especially on the defensive side of the ball. To be a true yearly contender in the West, you've gotta have a laundry list of 4 stars with your prized possession 5 stars to make up for the busts. Not just athletically, but academically. There's a lot of reasons why some kids just don't work out. Also, we can't rely on those 18 year olds to have an immediate impact either. Even some of the best talent takes a while to develop. Again, those three were complete anomalies.

Yeah pretty much all of that. The funny thing is during our lean Cutcliffe recruiting years a guy like Hampton busting would've been the second coming of Chernobyl for Ole Miss fans .

Every JUCO All American we signed back then was going to be the savior of Ole Miss football

Basically that whe was never the "rah rah guy" but an on field coach that could care less about celebrating but rather get the D lined up for the next play. He said that they are lacking that and need an on field coach to step forward. I thought Connors would be that guy this year but it sure hasn't panned out that way and the melt downs on the bench Saturday confirmed it.

The smart thing is to Co-DC him with an up and coming guy that is fringe DC level like Tosh Lupoi

Put together the following defensive staff

DT- Tosh Lupoi (Co-DC)
DE/OLB- Lance Thompson (Co-DC)
ILB - Brian Jean-Mary (from Texas)
DB- Aazaar Abdul-Rahim (from Maryland)

Brian Jean-Mary may be part of a bad Texas defense performance, but their LBs play has been reasonable. More importantly, Jean-Mary has recruiting experience of Texas as well as Georgia/Florida from his time at Louisville/Georgia Tech as well

Aazaar Abdul-Rahim would be the best hire of the bunch. The guy was a key off field assistant at Alabama and now doing great as DB coach in Maryland under DJ Durkin. Before that he had a DB training academy for NFL prospects that had a good bit of success
