If you are reading between the lines (watch last night's presser), Freeze is planning to make some changes in defensive staffing at the end of the season. Not sure if some of the offense positions are up for grabs either, but we'll see.

Guesses:

Wommack - nearing retirement age, likely gone
Kiffin - NCAA shite?, recruiting fails lately, he may be gone
Jones - brings little in recruiting, likely gone
Batoon - insiders say he gets a bad rap by fans, could be gone anyway

The criteria for replacement:

Recruiting

Recruiting
Technical Coaching

People keep raving about Kiffin. Our d-line is super undisciplined and missing a lot of the fundamentals. We can't lay all the blame on the linebackers for our poor run defense. They're not containing, filling their gaps, etc. Ex: Look at Channing and all the potential he had. A solid coach makes him an all SEC player. We couldn't Big Nkem to do anything but sometimes blow up a lineman.

I'm not saying fire Kiffin, as he's arguably our best defensive coach, but he needs some help from a DC who knows wtf he's doing.

we don't have a consistent pass rush and often have to blitz to get to the qb. That's not good for our secondary. But I doubt Kiffin is going anywhere. He can recruit and we need that on d now.

Kiffin may be NCAA fallout. Otherwise he should stay.

I'd wait a year to get rid of Wommack then bring in Travaris Robinson, USCe's DC. A little bias as an Auburn fan (he played at AU) but the guy is an absolute stud in the making

-Former Recruiter of the year
-Muschamp has been grooming him for years
-Success as DC at USCe year 1
-All of the kids he eval'd (including 3*s) have been studs for Auburn

Everything sounds good except this part:

Another year in defensive recruiting misses and the same mistakes over and over in the SEC West would be more detrimental

Honestly, I think TRob is a good hire even next year. He is a smart and patient dude though, he probably wants another year under Muschamp.

I could see him leaving after 2 years of being DC to do his own thing, I can't see him walking into OM's situation this green

I wish I could be as positive as y'all to think that we could actually see staff changes but I still find it very hard to believe that we will see any more than one change. As we've seen, Freeze is stubborn and tight with his boys.

That's probably my irrationally negaReb sense talking though.

Problem with trying to hire TRob is he won't leave before he thinks he is ready. He knows there is a ton to learn from Muschamp on D and has a great situation

You'd have to pay an outrageous sum to even be in the picture which again is going to a guy with one year experience

I think we may roll the dice and get a "recruiting" DC. That way we can make up for the lack of recruiters at staff positions. Ole Miss can't afford to have "zeros" in recruiting, so an enfranchised DC that doesn't want to hit the road won't work for us.

Defense is all about players and athletes. Scheme is overrated AF.

To a degree, but our DC is having them lineup so poorly it looks like he's maliciously trying to sabotage us. A team of P Willy's couldn't negate what we're doing. Not making an adjustment after multiple break out runs from the same set/play is past stupidity and actually suspicious. Powe could come back, read Defenses for Dummies, and put together a more intelligent scheme.

I think I noticed in the Arky game how out of position we were on some outside runs. I don't think if that's just the players being dumb or poor preparation. Anyone could've run through the holes that LF ran through on Saturday. 180 yards to Rawleigh Williams is a travesty too.

Regardless, Wommack has had success when he's had players (2014), but is that more of an anomaly?

Either way the talent issue on defense isn't going to be fixed overnight, and with our recruiting class being terrible right now, it may be another 2 years before we see a good defense.

We need 11 new players on defense and a new DC..

Speaks said there would be no drop off in talent after big rob left... There's a BIG drop off... Gross not making any plays in the backfield... linebackers couldn't play for my high school here in Texas (seriously)... corners and safeties would be 2nd string at memphis... we are a complete shitshow on that side of the ball...

I honestly don't expect to win anymore games this year..

Here's some replacement candidates that have a fit:

Tom Allen - Indiana DC. IU is 26th in the country in yards per play defensively. Obvious Ole Miss connection.

Erik Chinander - UCF DC. 1st year coach, young so should recruit well. UCF was one of the worst D's in CFB last year, now 18th in yards per play defensively. Their defense is paired with Scott Frost's offense which is HUNH.

Jesse Minter - Georgia State DC. Has former dumpster fire GSU as one of the top defenses in the Sun Belt. Knows ATL area and is one of the best recruiters in lower-level CFB.

Not always. Look at Wisconsin. Or, on the flip side, Texas. While it's easier to coach defense with Alabama's players, a defense full of 4 and 5 stars and bad coaching is still gonna struggle, and a defense full of 3 stars with good coaching is gonna play well.
