No worries, people from Alabama and South Carolina are well known as being calm, cool and collected in the face of driving in winter weather, especially since many will be driving through winter weather mecca Atlanta. Shouldn't be an issue on the interstates of Georgia at all.

My weather app said 4"-7" for Columbia, SC on Saturday. bullshite. I've lived here for almost 10 years now and I don't think we've seen 4"-7" TOTAL in the years I've lived here.

If you've lived in Columbia for 10 years, then you have seen a 4 inch snow event.

Popeyes and Bojangles be busy the days before a winter storm. Got to have that chicken when it gets cold.

We're better prepared here in Atlanta now than then. I think.

Nope. If that same situation repeated, you'd have the same result all across the southeast.
The problem then wasn't that Atlanta, Birmingham, Montgomery, etc was unprepared for snow and ice. They were prepared as any southern city ever is for winter weather.
The problem was that particular system arrived several hours earlier and roughly a hundred miles further south than even the most pessimistic predictions. At least in the case of Alabama, all those people thought they were getting sent home in plenty of time to get ahead of the weather only to find themselves on the road when it hit.

Mistake #1 - Trusting some crappy phone weather app.

Even Central Louisiana is getting on the wintry mix.

Actually that snowstorm hit much further NORTH and much quicker than predicted. That was the same storm that produced over an inch of sleet and freezing rain which produced a solid inch thick sheet of ice all the way down here in Mobile. It was supposed to miss Bham and Atlanta well to the south but the precipitation made it much further north than expected. The inch or two of snow that fell in Bham and Atlanta immediately froze on all paved surfaces and turn them into ice rinks. Let the same unique scenario unfold in just about any mid sized to large metro are in the country and there would have been countless wrecks and stranded motorists there as well.

There were hints as early as the night before that Atlanta and Birmingham would be in the mix.

You're right. The passage of time blurred my memory. I sit right on what was supposed to be the edge of it, but it would have been the northern edge. As it worked out, we were smack in the middle of it.
Even with that, the bad timing miss was the real bug. NOBODY expected it to happen when it did. I remember looking out my window around 9:00, seeing ice forming on the bumpers of parked cars, and thinking 'Oh Shait".
You're 100% right about the impact though. Same situation with the bad forecast miss anywhere in the US, and the same chaos ensues.

NWS Atlanta just upgraded their Winter Storm Watch to a Winter Storm Warning beginning at 4 PM eastern tomorrow.
Now saying there is a potential for 4-6 inches of snow in the metro area by 1 PM Saturday.

People in South Carolina can't drive period. Add nature and you're putting your life into someone else's hands every time you get on the road.

Nothing funnier than watching a southerner trying to drive in winter weather. 3 inches and you all freak out.
