Why is cultural appropriation considered a bad thing by some?

This has always puzzled me. Seems like if you're a minority and the majority not only accept part of your culture but decide to make it part of their culture that it would be a good thing.

I can't even come up with one reason why it would be bad. This is probably not the best place to look for the answer but why not give it a try.

Does anyone know the argument on the other side of this debate?

People want to maintain their unique cultural identity. As soon as something is adopted by the mainstream, it can't be a specific cultural identifier anymore, and is no longer what makes "us" different from "them".

Cultural appropriation is a meaningless made up term, invented as a means to seek out victimhood where none exists.

Not even a thing. Another one of the stupidest turns of phrase of our time.

Largely it seems to be rooted in the idea that whitey is stealing other people's cultures, sometimes even profiting by it, as part of its domination and marginalization of others. It is stupid. Not surprisingly it isn't wrong for other people the world over to appropriate Western European culture.

While some of it is overblown (like idk if you're white and you wear dreads or braids) some people have don't like the fact that people are trivializing some of the most sacred aspects of their cultures. Like if you wear Indian henna tattoos for fun or if you wear a kimono or a Native American headdress to Coachella.

There are some other cultural aspects that people would love to share, they just ask that you be respectful is all

That is largely correct.

Western Europe and the West as a whole has been one of the most dominant influences in the world for hundreds of years, first by colonization and then capitalism.

So if you're asking why people in Sri Lanka and Kenya are wearing jeans and eating McDonalds it's mainly due to the large American presence and influence in these countries.

Who the hell cares. People are too damn sensitive to crap, tbh.

"Cultural appropriation" is a fricking crock.

In the vein of SJWisms, henna was appropriated from Egypt and the Mediterranean cultures of the Middle East by those evil people in India.

Yeah, these people would be clueless about what is sacred in other cultures, but the average Coachella attendee couldn't locate Japan, or name a single Plains Indian tribe.

Bottom line is, there really isn't anything new under the sun Trace something back far enough, and there's overlap with another culture somewhere down the line. That's normal. Cultures don't exist in a vacuum, only able to be virtuously expressed by members of said culture. They exist to influence each other. They will continue to do so regardless of oversensitive PC types.

Where does shite like this end? Who gets to decide how much time must elapse before someone else is able to safely adopt aspects of a different culture? I'm not one to just scream and rage against PC-ness, but the very notion of this concept is ridiculously absurd.

Influence yes. Presence no. They see our shite on tv, they like it, they copy it. Good on them. Same with most Americans. They see it somewhere, the like it, they copy it. Who am I to say you can't do something because of your ethnicity.

I don't think minorities should be able to drive cars or fly in airplanes since White people invented them. They are stealing our culture.

Not sure. America is a melting pot and everyone should be learning from everyone and getting their shot at it.

I saw Julio and Juan cooking up burgers at a local joint the other day. I'm filling out lawsuit as I type this. I feel cultural appropriation is taking place. Close em down.

There are plenty of Indians (like my sister) that wear henna for fun.

People need to loosen up.
