I listen (and play, i'm a pianist in my spare time) all types of music and I think I have a good overall grasp for the overall music landscape. I feel these are the best musicians as far as pure talent is concerned from the 20th century
1. Art Tatum - no one has ever mastered a musicaal instrument like Tatum mastered the piano, ever, period. and he was blind.
2. Jimmi Hendrix - greatest guitarist of all time and was a prodigy
3. Michael Jackson - child abuse crap aside, he was a lycral genius. Like literally every song he ever wrote was a hit
4. Elton John - brilliant pianist and great song writer.
5. Miles Davis - literally created an entire era of jazz single handily. Kind of blue is IMHO the single best album of any genre
6. John Lennon - The beatles. Nuff said
7. Elvis Presley - the godfather of rock and roll. Brilliant performer
8. Stevie Wonder - Could sing, play the piano and play the harmonica, all at elite levels. The album eivets rednow is probably one of my fav of all time as it's basically just a show of stevie wonder's versatility.
9. Barbara Streisand- As much of a fan as I am of Ella Fitzgerald and Whitney Houston, Streisand in her prime could not be touched vocally. She was amazing
10. Jay Z - While rap is not really all my thing, Jay Z is a prodigy at what he does. He basically free styles classic albums. The Blue print, which is my fav rap album of all time, he free styled in 2 days. His free styles on hot 97 are better than 98% of rappers albums.

Bernie Taupin wrote many, many of Eltons biggest hits.
Also any list that does not include Eric Clapton is complete shite.
Streisand is not a musician. She is a singer. Big difference. I also would not characterize Elvis as a great musician. Great singer and entertainer, but not musician. Most of his music was played by a back up band and written by many other writers.

any list without art tatum on it is pure bullshite
honestly not a big fan of all his music in general, I like him better when he's remaking or replaying other songs, but he's extremely gifted as a musician
quote:well dammit it's my fricking list lol i'm including singers too

I think you gotta add Kenny Chesney in there somewhere. His sexuality may be questionable but his status as a musician isn't.

Going by your requirements, I would put Freddie Mercury in there somewhere.

Hank Sr. deserves to be on the list as well, if we're allowed to count more vocal and lyrically involved artists.

Musicians or performers and songwriters also included?
your list makes no separation so here goes mine with all mixed together, judged mainly by how much permanent impact they made on popular music:
Jimmy Rodgers
Bob Dylan
Robert Johnson
Bill Monroe
Elvis
Buddy Holly
Chuck Berry
John Fogerty sp?
Jim Morrison
Aretha Franklin or Lorreta Lynn.. it's a toss up
