I don't understand how folks get pleasure for killing animals just to put their heads up on a wall?

I'm a hunter, but I do it because I like eating meat, and was taught that anyone who eats meat should understand and respect the unwilling sacrifice animals make for us to eat. Personally, I don't take pics or try to bag the biggest deer. It's strictly for sustenance.

I'm not judging, just trying to understand the mentality.

I never really understood the "trophy" aspect of it either. I been hunting for nearly 40 years but have no interest killing something just to decorate a wall.

The "trophy" deer I've taken aren't hanging on my den wall.

It's human nature to conquer and collect cool shite. Some people think a lion's head is cool.

I guess it's the 'challenge', the perceived 'danger' aspect to it, although I don't think it's as dangerous as it used t be. Some folks are addicted to the adrenaline rush. I'm a hunter, but I hunt for food. I don't kill just to kill.

But I don't agree with the folks that are up in arms about trophy hunting either. Hell, we have folks by the hundred thousands who are in the woods every deer season 'trophy hunting'. Sure, a good many will eat the meat - but a doe is much better eating than most bucks.

Philosophically, what's the difference between a lunker bass, a 12 point buck or an aged lion? Not a hell of a lot.

As long as everything is legal, I'm good with it.
And even if it's purely for sustenance (feeding hungry kids), I'm okay with it if it's NOT legal (like out of season.)

I tend to think like you do. As long as all of the animal is used and meat is eaten, I don't have an issue. I'd rather put a doe or two early in the season and hunt a trophy buck late in the season for the trophy, and the last bit of meat for the yr. I don't need more than that and would never shoot more than that myself.

IMHO fishing is slightly different, given it's catch and release, which is why I didn't include it. But I agree that if you catch and keep it it's the same thing. We are also more naturally inclined to feel compassion for mammals than birds or fish, much more so if they star in their own Disney movie and longest running Broadway show in history.

I wouldn't be against lion hunting if it was for sustenance. But considering the fact that there are only 30k of them left in the world and people still hunt them, I find it extremely sad that we collectively care so little for the other creatures inhabiting the earth.

As an avid hunter, I think that these safaris are for idiots, but I don't really enjoy criticizing people for what they spend money on.

i'm amazed that Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans, and Baltimore are having record murders this year and nobody gives a shite and one damn lion dies and people lose their minds.

I don't understand it but I have nothing against it. I compare it to my love of drag racing I spend large amounts of money trying to win a trophy and a very small amount of prize money. People are different and like different things as long as what's being done is being done properly I have no issues with it.

I only shoot does anymore, and have never had a buck head mounted.

I can understand wanting a big buck though, more than killing a lion or a tiger, or something nobody will eat. That shite is a damn shame.

If it was strictly about the hunting/tracking aspect, seems like filming it would be enough. Why would you have to kill it?

The food from trophy hunting is generally given to the locals.

and those people are damn hungry, I understand that.
They are too poor to afford high ideals, or consider how rare these animals really are. Their universe is small, and revolves around their bellies.

When the animals are gone though, the hunters and film people won't be coming anymore with their money and stuff.

I don't find anything wrong in ethically responsible legal hunts.

I choose not to partake in those type of events where fenced or canned shooting of animals occurs.

Pope & Young along with Boone & Crocket are very strict with their qualifications and if you have any type of criminal record or Game & fish violations you will be stripped of your record and removed from the books for all time.

There are some people that don't understand how people get pleasure from watching 18-20 year olds running around on a football field. I don't trophy hunt but I understand why some do. And it's not because they're sociopaths like dipshits love to say.

What's a bigger challenge: hunting a predator in it's natural habitat while factoring in it's senses of smell, hearing, sight, etc? Or shooting a 80 pound doe over a 50lb sack of corn to get 40 lbs of meat?

<--- hunter (for both meat and trophy)
