I'm going on my first one this year, honestly all I've heard for sure that's good is the eating and that's all that matters to me. Anybody been to Cozumel and costa maya? Any good excursions to try or bad ones to avoid? Thanks in advance.

one of our friends asked us to go. i was hesitant. it was not the worst time i've ever had, but just about every vacation i've ever done was better.

the walmart comment is accurate.

good:

food all day. if you don't give a care about eating shite all day, it's a blast. i had one day where i just DGAF and enjoyed eating a burger, quesadilla, pizza, and chili cheese fries. just one day though.

something to do. if you get bored on a cruise, it's your lazy arse fault and yours alone. there's ton to do.

night shows.

stops at destinations and excursions

bad:

alcohol is overpriced and rarely included in the package. for fun, i looked at a couple of bills that were sitting outside of rooms on the last day. some people had $2k alcohol bills. i'm sure they were going to be pissed at themselves.

food. good with the bad to above, it's golden corral quality food. and there will be hogs.

timed eating, if you choose not to do buffet stuff, you're stuck with a stupid schedule for fine dining and may have to sit with people you don't want to.

ugly: from my expreience, 75% of the worst of society was on my cruise. they were the walmart of america.

drunk idiots

fat people

the cruise line's stupid schedule. nothing was more infuriating than having to do things at their schedule.

it was a fun experience and i'm glad i did it but i'll go hang out in riviera maya, isla de mujeres, or an island from here on out.

The food is only good if you do the seated meals where you have to make reservations and dress up. Even then, it's not nearly as good as you can get at a good restaurant at a Caribbean destination. The food isn't horrible, just kinda okay. I did a Norwegian cruise, FWIW.

I hated every minute of the one I went on. Walmart at sea is the perfect description. Thankfully, I didn't have to pay for it.

Good: Mayan tour during the Cozumel stop, comedian act, desserts, the gym

Bad: food was disappointing, wasn't that much to do on the boat during the day if you don't gamble

Ugly: Everything particularly alcohol costs a lot, seasickness, lots of obnoxious people

That's what I figured there'd be a lot of fat asses. Luckily me and the wife to be agreed to only pick one day to drink alcohol to save money. Other than that, we plan on enjoying ourselves.

My wife and I agreed to only do one drink a piece each evening. It was the way to go. The sports bar location had the best drinks in terms of alcohol content. Don't waste money on alcoholic drinks in the dining room though.

It depends on the cruise line.

Walmart - Carnival and Norwegian

The ones that are a step up from those, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, are much nicer. Beautiful ships and a solid food experience. The entertainment is soso in my view.

What I like about a cruise is that someone else is driving and I can just relax.

The whole Walmart thing is completely overblown. Are there trashy people?? Absolutely. But it's no worse than your typical beach crowd. Also, there are much quieter places to go, avoid the main pool deck and it's very relaxing.

The food is about what you would expect. The buffett is very typical, think a slightly nicer version of Golden Corall. The MDR is typical banquet food, but sometimes you can find some really good items on there. The specialty restaurants are really good, but cost extra.

The alcohol is ridiculous. Either get a good deal on a drink package, or budget out what you want to spend. They are definitely not watered down, expect for the pre-made drinks.

Cozumel- I would do Nachi Cocum. It's a great little beach club that has an awesome pool, and is all inclusive for $50 pp. They only let in 50 people so it's super chill and never crowded.

Costa Maya- Mahahual is the little beach town that is just a few minutes away, I think the cab is like $2. They have a lot of good food, and cheap drinks. Plus you can get a massage on the beach for like $20. Also the ruins here are awesome, and much less crowded than other places.

Just relax, and don't let the little things stress you out, and you will have a great time!

What cruise line? How long is the cruise? When is it? Where are you going out of?

I've heard short cruises (4-day) out of New Orleans are indeed like some shitty town or area's Walmart. My neighborhood Walmart would be a huge step-up according to what I have heard.

I did a 7 day out of Galveston on the Carnival Conquest. I went in late August. The last week before college football started. That way there are very few kids and younger party people. They are in school or preparing for it.

Our assigned dinner table had a younger married couple - the guy was an engineer and the woman was the district attorney for a small town in South Texas. We have kept in touch and they now live in Houston and have two young children. We also had a retired guy who was nice and kind of interesting for us. We would go to dinner early to report the different places we would see him reading his book(s). I went all over the ship and I swear I would see him in 3 or 4 different places every day. Always sitting by himself reading a book. He was our "Where's Waldo".

Anyway, my cruise was not like a Walmart and was a good escape. I did the 5-star steakhouse thing that costs extra and the dinners in the dining room were very good. They have a 24 hour pizza station that has great reviews. They also have 24 hour room service available that is free. I have heard the pastrami, Ruben, and BLT sandwiches are really good.

Food on the 2 ships out of Galveston - Breeze and Freedom:

I know quite a few people who have paid more for the alcohol than they did the cruise. I usually got the drink-of-the-day and most were pretty good. But, I got these and drank a lot for cheap with the unlimited soda card. I brought Crown Royal, rum and Wild Turkey - American Honey and brought alcohol home.

I couldn't remember the name and did a google search for cruise flasks. There were results for Amazon and Walmart. I don't know if they would be the same quality as the rumrunners. Before packing them, full of alcohol, in my luggage, I tested the ones I got by filling with hot water and standing on them. They are very secure and do not leak.

If you go to the Cayman Islands I would suggest the submarine excursion. That was really cool. I just looked and they have them at different locations.

Guess it varies from cruise to cruise. I've only been on one cruise, and it wasn't overblown at all. I'd say 75-80% of the people on there fit the stereotype.

If you go on a 3-4 day discount cruise out of the Gulf, you'll probably find stereotypes are accurate.

You get what you pay for. Most cruises are very good, just don't be cheap

Yes it is. In reality, most people who post here are not upper middle class. It's our group of people.

On discount cruises you'll see a few socially inept people but if you let those bother you, life's going to be tough

This. If you buy the Wal-Mart cruise, you'll be traveling with Wal-Mart shoppers.

Correct. RC is a step up, but still affordable. If you plan on doing a lot of drinking, do the unlimited drink package. $55 a day hurts up front, but after looking at some others drink receipts, I realized we saved a lot of money every day.

Good: Unlimited (Prepaid) food and booze. You won't be impressed with the food unless you go to a specialty restaurant (pay for the meal) but it certainly isn't bad. You can order any amount of appetizers/entrees for no extra charge, so we were able to try some things we normally wouldn't have. We had a great table, so we enjoyed going to dinner every night. Shows are normally entertaining, and excursions at the countries are as fun as you want them to be.

Bad: Food isn't as good as you'd want it to be, but as said above, I still enjoyed it. We got lucky and were surrounded by awesome people the whole time, but a ship is only so big, so if you aren't that could get really fricking annoying.

Ugly: If you get seasick I highly suggest bringing medicine, because that would certainly be a trip ruiner.

Imagine getting norovirus at Walmart. That's my opinion of cruises.

Yes you can. We had dove one night and I had ordered something else. The engineer with us ordered three orders so I got a couple. shite was very good.

On the Thursday elegant night they had a bunch of entrees. The engineer guy got like three orders of steak and I got three or four orders of lobster with the butter garlic sauce. If you find something you like, you can eat as much as you want. The Lava cake is pretty damn good also.

You are an idiot then. A disease as opposed to going and having a hell of a fun time and eating food that someone else prepared for you.

I did the snorkel tour excursion in Jamaica. They had free beer (jamaican) and shots the whole trip and then took us to Jimmy Buffet's bar & restaurant afterwards. Great fricking time.

At Cayman Islands I did the submarine excursion which woa totally awesome with stuff from the war that you don't see unless you dive are in a submarine.

The only thing about the Caymans is they have more money than Americans and don't give a shite if you want service or not. Kiss off.
