What would the USA be without sports?

Better? Worse? More productive? More boring?
I say it'd be a sad case of amber waves of grain sitting around with nothing to do, but that's just me. What say you?

A free for all, carnage everywhere, roving bands of young men killing each other for fun and to prove superiority. Thank God for sports.

Competitive sports allow for the expression of violence and conquest without any major bloodshed. In recent years, I also feel it has also been a subsitute for religious experience - not necessarily by any guidance or morals, of course - but through ecstatic, shared emotion.

The energy would be directed in different ways.
It would be a totally different paradigm.
As a thought exercise, it makes no sense to simply subtract sports from the current construct.

Depends...are you insinuating that sports never existed here or if they were suddenly taken away?
Because the attitudes and effects it would have would be way different between not ever knowing what having sports is like vs having sports then losing them.
Had we never had sports...wouldn't be much different. People would do other things to entertain themselves.
If we lost sports...mass depression and anger because people literally revolve their lives around their sports teams...sometimes that saturday watching football with friends/family is the only time of the week that people get to escape the grind of the real world and enjoy themselves.

I agree it would be boring even though I am not a huge pro sports fan.

More boring. The masses need entertainment.

We'd see tons more casinos. Gambling addictions would go up because people like competition, want to win at something, love to see people get happy, upset, victory, defeat.

I bet you are fun at parties.

I think Sleeping Tiger would be a blast at modern equivalents of the kool-aid acid tests...aka burn festivals.

It would be chaotic. I mean, tRant would just be the OTB. How frightening is that?

If sports didn't exist in America, people would invent them.

Worse.
You think politics and religion arguments are bad now?
Dear god, without sports...
We'd have websites like tCatholic Rant, Liberal LandThieves, etc.
ETA: Just thought of what conspiracy theorists would be like without sports. Plus, I'd probably drink a lot less.
:shudders:

When One Direction fans start Twitter trends, click on them. That. But way more.

All I know is that I won't be around to see that happen. Sports die, I die.

I think there would be an impact on our competitive nature if you removed all sports (The big 3, soccer, tennis, golf, poker, equestrian, fishing, hunting, sport shooting, any olympic sport, etc....) I think sports help drive the ambitious american spirit and instill it in the youts at a young age.
What would the masses do for entertainment? Reading, writing, studying, social circles? maybe.
What would people do on vacation? Would people even take vacations as frequently? Would people really pay money to go to the beach and lay in sand, they aren't swimming. Or are we just talking about all competitive sports here and not all sporting acts?
I think obesity would get out of control in this country. MS and TN would be really fricked.
Humans aren't designed to be lazy POS's.
