The Apollo 1 astronauts, Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom, Edward H. White II and Pilot Roger B. Chaffee, killed by a cabin fire during a launch rehearsal test. (1967)

Joined to fight right out of high school in WWII, flew sabers in Korea, asked to stay in combat, but was relieved to training and testing, Went back to college twice, He almost drowned on his first flight to space in the Liberty Bell Mercury flights, flew again in Gemini, A loving husband and father, was the presumptive first man to walk on the moon... and his death on the launch pad was a horrible reminder of just how real the space program was, and just how hard it was to land a man on the moon.
Shortly before his death, he said this to an Associated Press reporter: "If we die, we want people to accept it. We're in a risky business, and we hope that if anything happens to us it will not delay the program. The conquest of space is worth the risk of life."

Deke Slayton said in his book that Gus would have definitely been the first man on the moon had he not died.

I wasn't even thought of when they died so to me those astronauts names are an elementary, middle school, and high school in Huntsville

That about sums up my feelings reading this thread.

I knew the history behind the names but I never really think about it

When I was in grammar school, we would stop class (no matter what class you were in) and watch the launches. We would just sit there for hours with the TV on and watch every second of it.

It was very cool. What ever class you were in at the time, you would stay there until the launch was over.

America was America back then. Not this bullshite we live in now.

Same here, we didn't understand just how important it was but you knew it ment something just because they basically shutdown the school so we all could watch.

Back when men with America first mentalities walked the planet. They are far and few between these days.

Respect and awe is how I sum them up.

The OP has hit on a good topic, we need something like this again so all Americans can feel good about this country. Can we rally around a fence?

Thanks for posting.

The lesson to be learned through their death was... SHARE INFORMATION. The Russians had a similar accident a few years previously but wanted to keep it secret. Would that have changed things? Who knows, but I like to think so.

Incidentally, their deaths were caused by smoke inhalation. If the hatch could have been opened in time, they would have made it.

I was too young to understand the importance of the events and to have the feeling of "Merica" like I would now.

We have not had anything since then that matched it. Brought the country together.
