A University of North Carolina English course on the 9/11 attacks comes with a lengthy reading list of works that critics say portray Americans as the bad guys and radical Islamists as sympathetic, but some of the professor's former students warn those taking the class not to disagree with the professor.

According to a posting by a UNC student on higher education blog The College Fix, “Literature of 9/11” offers a syllabus of reading assignments that include poems, memoirs and graphic novels widely perceived as presenting terrorists in a sympathetic light and the U.S. as an imperialist nation. The course is taught by associate professor Neel Ahuja, and according to a review of his course syllabus, most of the reading focuses on justification. Required reading includes “Poems from Guantanamo: Detainees Speak,” a collection of poems written by terror detainees; “Reluctant Fundamentalist,” a work of fiction in which the protagonist is a successful Pakistani in the U.S. who eventually comes to believe America to be evil; and "Sirens of Baghdad," the final installment in a trilogy of novels focusing on Islamic fundamentalism.

quote:

However, online criticism of Ahuja’s teaching style says otherwise.

"He favors kids who share his own views, so learn to do that," wrote one poster who took the class in 2010. "A very interesting guy, just don't disagree with him.”

Another commenter agreed, writing last November, “AGREE WITH HIS STANCE IN YOUR PAPERS!!!!!”

“Portray yourself as a socialist who views USA as a horrible imperialist country squashing other countries- support illegal immigration and radical Islam,” wrote another commenter. “Then you will get an easy A.”

This is disgusting, frick unc for allowing this.

If I paid taxes in North Carolina, I would calculate what I owed the state that year, and send the check instead to the 9/11 Memorial.

And then fight them tooth and nail when they came after me for the taxes.

Fighting the government is your obligation as a citizen. Doesn't mean you're gonna win. But if you feel your cause is right, then don't back down.

Freedom of speech is great, everyone should have it. However, we should also be allowed to ridicule and chastise whoever would allow this type of crap to happen.

Wouldnt sacrifice any freedoms, but damn sure wouldn't pay someone with Govt money to try to brainwash into thinking that same Govt was the bad guys in the 9-11 attacks that killed over 3000 civilians.

What does this mean?

The issue isn't even with reading other points of view on 9/11 or international view of America. The issue is that those other views are presented as "correct" and that disagreement with the professor is discouraged. That's the antithesis of an academic environment.

That's my biggest problem with stuff like this...it's intellectually dishonest. I have no problem reading things I don't agree with...Mao's Little Red Book, Mein Kampf, Das Kapital....whatever, but having a professor penalize you for not agreeing with his worldview is horseshite.

The basis for these knee-jerk reactions are hearsay posts from anonymous former students posted on a random college website on the internet.

As for the selected reading, most Americans have absolutely no knowledge of their own government, much less world politics and history. "The Reluctant Fundamentalist" is about how prejudice towards Muslims in America fosters resentment in even the most educated of Muslims, which in turn causes a shift in worldview. It speaks not of justification, but of explanation. Our politicians do not want an explanation, they'd rather us live in constant fear of the boogeyman.

So let's just walk on eggshells to protect their delicate little feelings while they cut people's heads off and torture rape women who don't cover their faces in public.

Luckily, UNC students are too smart to be brainwashed by this stuff. Hopefully none of their athletes take it.

And the U.S. drones whole villages of women and children in Somalia, Yemen and Pakistan. The fact is, non-fundamentalist Muslims are more likely to become jihadists when U.S. foreign policy engages the entire region in war after war after war. This is a fact that was confirmed in the 9/11 Commission Report. Read pages 48-62 if you want. The fact is, if you ever want the War on Terror to be over, you have to understand what motivates someone to commit an act of terror.

My point is that people like you blindly believe the government's platitudes about Islamic extremism, just as you believed that the Soviets were going to blow us all up. They need us to be in perpetual fear to keep the war machine running and the defense contractors in business. Once they've served several terms in the House and Senate and have that nice retirement package, they go and lobby for these same firms who require the same amount of fear to keep the funding coming.

Go read General Smedley Butler.

First of all, I don't believe anything the Government tells me.

Secondly, the entire region is a gigantic shithole and I'd be happy if the US would just wash our hands of it entirely.

Finally, we already have a Sleeping Tiger on this board, the position has been filled.

You need the government to tell you to fear evil?

I don't need the U.S. Gov to tell me a decent part of the Muslims in the Middle East are evil.
