I'll be coming from Montgomery to Athens for the first time for the Bama game this seaaon. How should I go about this? Where to stay, eat, etc. I'll be a few weeks from 28 so I won't exactly be looking for the college crowd.

Most of the places are booked.
I booked a place on Friday at Candlewood Suites. It's about 10 minute drive from downtown. They should still have rooms available.

If you can't get a place within 10 minutes or so of downtown, just book a place in Madison or Greensboro. Each are about 45 minutes away (right off I-20) and are really nice little southern towns. If you're hellbent on experiencing Friday night downtown, though, you'll need to pull out the stops to get a place close to the action. Taxis aren't terribly plentiful (especially when the city is swamped for football) and while we have uber now, I'm not sure how reliable it is.
As for food, Athens is just lousy with great places to eat; it has really become a sort of food capital of the state. Really, just name your preference and we've probably got three places ranging from average to outstanding.
The bars need no mention but for someone beyond the whole college crowd thing, I'd hit up Allgoods, Trappeze, or The Globe. Also worth trying to get on the roof at the Georgia Theater for a beer. But, really, just walk Clayton, Broad, and Washington and find a place with a crowd and atmosphere that you think suits you. I guarantee we have one.
ETA: If you look up some hotels and post them here, I'll be able to tell you the perks in terms of location.

I'd also suggest Generals. Yes, I know it's extremely undergrad-ish, but it's kind of an athens staple and I would imagine someone used to tuscaloosa would probably enjoy it.

Uber is great, used it in Atlanta and Honolulu. Haven't used it in Athens though but I'm sure it's fine

I'll let you stay in my house for the hotels prices, lol

I'll offer my second bedroom up for the price of an average hotel 10 minutes away from downtown

any GSB discounts?
The past 5 years I've been staying with my longtime buddy who still lives in athens, but he has a kid now (I think about a year old) so I have a feeling I may not be as welcome going forward. I'm a good houseguest, but I mean eventually the wife is probably not gonna want people staying over with the new addition. Gonna have to maybe start looking at other options.

If you do that you might as well just drive up from Montgomery on Sat. morning. Buckhead nightlife is dead/dying & unless you stay at one of the 4* - 5* hotels it's bland as frick... N.E. is Gwinnett where everything is cookie cutter chain hotels/restaurants...
I'd do the Madison/Greensboro route if I wasn't staying in Athens proper. Lotta good/great restaurants & nice downtowns... JMO...

I realize that madison has a certain....charm I suppose, but if OP is fairly young, like under 30, he's going to have a hell of a lot better time in buckhead. Now, that doesn't take into account the price increase by staying in the area, and the hassle of having to drive the (probably close to) 2 hours leaving the stadium and getting there....but just comparing the experience of buckhead and madison isn't even a contest, IMO.

For the GSB I'll offer the low low price of gifting me 2 handles of mid shelf whiskey/Scotch

Just depends on what you're cool with; it's like St. Simons vs Jekyll for UGA/UF.
If you intend on being as drunk as possible all weekend, then yeah Buckhead would be the better non-Athens option.
If you'd rather have a more scenic albeit quieter Friday night/Sunday AM, Madison is a really great Southern town with some nice restaurants. Plus, the scenery on the 45 min drive from Madison to Athens shits all over the 1.5 to 2 hour drive down 316 from Buckhead.
