That used to be me when I was a train dispatcher for BNSF.

We really do our best to avoid that. It's actually illegal for us to leave them there for longer than 10 minutes. Of course, we try not to let that happen.

Sometimes the train has an issue and has to stop, though. Can't be helped. Trust me when I say we're just as stressed in that situation as you are. I know I personally had 5 different bosses that would come into my pod freaking out asking why that train hadn't moved. It was like a scene from Office Space.

The ones I hate are the trains unhooking cars, block road, pull foreward, back up repeat

It was a lot of fun, but yes it could get overwhelming at times.

The worst territories were the ones where I had to play dispatcher, yard master, train master and crew caller all at the same time. They were smaller yards, obviously, but when you're doing all that at once it can still get ahead of you fast. Those were also the most fun jobs, though.

When I had to leave BNSF because my wife and I moved back to MS, I wanted to transfer to Memphis as a trainmaster. I had only been dispatching for 4 years, though, so they wouldn't let me make that move. Had to just leave the company altogether. I hated it, but the move was what was best for us at the time.

Gotcha. I'm on an awful territory right now. No yardmaster and there is about 200 miles of track, couple dozen local jobs and tons of mainline trains. But I just got transferred so it's gonna be much better

That sounds terrible.

Glad to hear you're getting out of that mess.

Trainmaster. Who says the OTB isn't interesting? I'm sorry to learn that the job is so stressful. The job title sounds incredibly cool.
