Thing about our country that angers me the most right now

It's not about whether I agree or disagree with gay marriage or the confederate flag, the problem is everyone is all about paying attention and being informed about these issues when at the end of the day they are mostly symbolic and have little impact on the overall success and productivity of this country
Now consider something like this new trade agreement, which could be a really big deal and will have tangible economic impacts on our countries and others AND they are trying to fast track and sneak it under the wire not allowing us to even read the full text until 60 days after it passes (where did that rule come from, how bizarre is that?) yet the general public doesn't even know it's happening. They don't care, and the media doesn't talk about it either.
So basically, we are all so worried about symbolic things that at the end of the day don't really matter that we don't pay attention to or try to do things that might actually help this country
FTR, I don't know yet if I support the trade agreement or not

I'm pretty uninterested in American affairs (we got enough problems here in Texas to worry about what foreigners are doing with their marriage laws) but here in Texas we don't really care about the marriage law stuff. Less government is best government, we say around here.

Vote assholes in power, get assholes in power. Don't know what more can be said.

Fair enough. It's hard to take a position on something that the government has made every effort to obfuscate the details on. From what I understand, it sounds like we're handing over our sovereignty, and about to be subjected to the rule of people we don't elect, which probably won't be that much of a change, really.

I agree with what you're saying about the flag, to an extent, but not in regards to marriage equality. You're talking about a lot of people in our society who were being denied the basic rights afforded to everyone else. The government doesn't really belong in marriage in the first place, but these people were being denied basic spousal privileges such as healthcare benefits, or even in some cases the right to see the person they love if they were hospitalized due to "family only beyond this point" policies. Civil rights for everyone should be an issue at the forefront of public consciousness. A denial or erosion of rights for one group is a slippery slope for the entire populace.

The thing is that this was not a constitutional issue one way or another until the judicial branch legislated that marriage is a foundational right.
If you can't see the potential harm in that precedent then you don't understand liberty. Social transformation without representation (credit Scalia).
Read Robert's dissent.

Im glad this gay marriage thing passed just to get it off the fricking television. Lets get on with it and figure out how to solve the 18 trillion in debt we have that fricks us ALL.

Texas is a very heavily subsidized state, no?

Dude, everyone knows about this trade deal at this point. They don't know what it consists of, but they know of it and are making a stink of it. It's been all over the Internet. Reddit, Forbes, The Guardian, and The Economist. PBS had a news hour; I've seen it on Fox News and CNN websites; the WSJ did a full blown "what you need to know about the TPP; and there is a Wikipedia page on it.
There's even a website called exposethetpp.org
So now that we've cleared that up, do you really think that human rights don't matter? You know what else was productive? Slave labor. Maybe we should bring that shite back. I mean frick it, right? Productivity > human rights!!!1
It's easy to say that these things are just "symbolic" (this is idiotic by the way, and I suggest you look into why so many gay couples want to get married. Hint: it starts with a "t" and ends with an "x") when you're most likely a white, straight male who has never experienced any form of discrimination.

I worded poorly. I meant more along the lines of DoD, DoE, NASA, etc. not subsidized per se, but big govt is dug in and invested in the state.

I agree with 100% of this. I've said for awhile that the government should give the term marriage to the church and call it a union on their end.
Someone give me an argument against gay marriage without bringing up religion or personal beliefs.
I had the drunk discussion last night with a buddy about the flag. I don't think it should be flown on public property at all since it represents a defunct government from 150 years ago. If you want to remember it, present the versions in a memorial or a museum with the rest of history but it shouldn't be flown. I have no issue with people selling it or flying it on private property.

And people that have done essentially nothing in their lives get to cry loud and often enough to get what they want.

Feigned interest or offense behind a keyboard.
They will just jump to the next issue without ever being satisfied. See the flag thread here. I think that sums it up pretty well.

I think social media in its greatest extent is a joke.

I agree actually. I don't have a fb, have tweeted maybe 5 times back when I was still in school, and just scroll Instagram occasionally for summer bikini pics

Yep.
I know I am the outlier here. People that differ in thought are too afraid to be shouted down by the group regardless of what may be right or wrong or their personal values.
