The goal of this thread is to keep the rest of the board clean of Obamahating tonight and to house the coming discussion on his proposals. I'm sure it will be a failure.

LINK

quote:

The Obama administration claims that raising the capital gains rate, ending the inheritance loophole and tacking a fee on financial firms would generate $320 billion in revenue over a decade. Obama wants to put the bulk of that money into a series of measures aimed at helping middle-class Americans. Among them:

--A credit of up to $500 for families in which both spouses work. The administration says 24 million couples would benefit from the proposal, which would apply to families with annual income up to $210,000.

--Expanding the child care tax credit to up to $3,000 per child under age 5. The administration says the proposal would help more than 5 million families with the cost of child care.

--Overhauling the education tax system by consolidating six provisions into two, a move that could cut taxes for 8.5 million families. Republicans have been open to the idea of consolidating education tax breaks.

The president's address will also include calls for lawmakers to increase paid leave for workers and enact broad cybersecurity rules.

It's all about the domestic agenda tonight. Obama is going back to the one issue he gets any traction with, income inequality/the 1%/socialism/helping the middle class. The Republicans aren't likely to be receptive to any of it and we'll spend weeks debating income inequality while the political game rages on to nothing. My only hope is the low hanging fruit of the tax code, but too many special interests have their hand in that kitty to expect anything substantial.

Mention terrorism. Mention Iran. Mention Cuba. Remind everyone of the shitshow in Russia right now. Drop mike.

Yay Democracy.

Really? Unbelievable!? You're telling me we're not actually a democracy where every single person votes on every proposal and instead elect representatives to do that instead? No way.

Unless someone is literally arguing the USA is actually a democracy, there's really no need to point this out.

I see 3 items that creates or puts a higher tax burden on some in the name of "helping" certain folks. The last sounds ok. Not the paid leave.. that's ridiculous.

eta- and having said that. I've yet to watch one of his SOTU's and won't tonight. His last 2 yrs should be a lame duck Presidency, which would be beneficial to the country, imo. BUT.. Boehner will screw that up too. Both sides need to burn.

I hate the income inequality argument. It is driven by nothing but pure greed of the government and envious attitudes of poor lazy people not willing to work to earn their keep, so they vote for the government to take from those that have and give to those that don't.

Or we could have 1) congressional term limits 2) and keep corporations fron funding political campaigns. Bringing more power back to the people. Your vote does not matter and its proven by the lack of term limits despite overwhelming approval, plus crony capitalist bail outs. Why change anything when the blame game shift between 2 monopolies is such an affective form of "governing". Always funny watching half the population think its the blue teams fault while the other half blame the red team.

Fine with the purposes tax increases noted.

Do not support #1 idea of $500 credit.

Hate idea number 2 and it alone makes me say no to entire thing.

Fine with number 3.

There is my take.

I see a bunch of proposals that will never pass either house and even if enacted wouldn't make much of an impact. It's another wedge being thrown out by the WH.

Oh, heard from an official from the treasury department a few weeks ago that tax reform has greater traction in Washington right now than it has in a long time. He then said all that means is the chances of major reform are very slight rather than no chance at all.

As for the address tonight, thanks for summary but doubt I will watch.

Never underestimate the lack of spine from the R leadership.

I assumed as much.

I won't be watching either, and dig into the actual proposals as time allows. Much better ways to spend that time.

And I agree with your post 1000%. It is a million times more important than any laws congress might pass. Won't ever happen though.

Washington is broke beyond repair. The two parties are one in the same to me. Whoever has the money to buy the votes makes the rules. The parties and lawmakers are inconsequential puppets marching to orders from special interests and lobbiests to accomplish the one and only thing that matters to any of them - reelection.

congressional term limits

It's the people's job to do that. Election night is where you limit their terms. The poor state of our legislature lies with the voters on this end.

In an ideal world, sure. Since that isn't going to happen, I'd settle for total transparency on where the money is coming from. I want to know who owns my representatives.

We the voters get sucked into the game and allow them to keep playing it. I see a call for a more educated and engaged electorate, one that is sorely needed. Everyone wants to blame the media and corporations for the sorry state of affairs, but the reality is that it is our own damn fault.

We've gotten the government we deserve.

Damn. Agree with your follow up points as well.

The clowns in Washington are a reflection of the electorate and they are the failures we deserve. We (the electorate) loves to play the blame game, pick sides, root for their guy, bash the other side, etc. Washington is just a reflection of the people really.

And I'm sure most people here will crap all over everything he says while pretending not to be middle class themselves.

Barrack Obama was out jogging one morning along the parkway when he tripped, fell over the bridge railing and landed in the creek below.
Before the Secret Service guys could get to him, 3 kids who were fishing
pulled him out of the water. He was so grateful he offered the kids whatever they wanted.
The first kid said, 'I want to go to Disney World & Barrack said, 'No
problem, I'll take you there on Air Force One.'
The second kid said, 'I want a new pair of Nike Air Jordan shoes. Barrack
said, 'I'll get them for you and even have Michael Jordan sign them.'
The third kid said, ' I want a motorized wheelchair with a built in TV and
stereo headset.'
Barrack was a little perplexed by this and said, 'But you don't look like
you're handicapped.
The kid said, 'I will be after my dad finds out I saved your arse from
drowning.
