Most "experts" have Kentucky listed as either Southeast or if you want to break it further down the Mississippi Valley. You maybe have a couple who will classify it as mid-west, but only if they have no grasp of the culture as well as physical region.

This is what the Library of Congress (and by my link National Geographic) lists as official geographic regions of the US:

quote:

Atlantic States: All states that border the Atlantic Ocean, from Maine to Florida
East: All states east of the Mississippi River
Middle Atlantic States: Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania
Middle West or Midwest: from the Rocky Mountains to the Allegheny Mountains; Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin
New England: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont
Northeast: east of the Mississippi River, north of the Ohio and Potomac rivers: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Wisconsin.
Northwest: states between Lake Superior and the Pacific Ocean: Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, Wyoming.
Pacific Northwest: Old Oregon country: Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Washington, Wyoming.
Pacific States: All states that border the Pacific Ocean: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington.
Rocky Mountain: Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming.
South Atlantic: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia.
South: States south of the Mason-Dixon Line: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia.
New Southwest: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah.
Old Southwest: Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas
Southwest: Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah.
West: All states west of the Mississippi River.

This also covers your multiple regions and overlapping.

That's a shitty list. Wisconsin Northeast. Iowa northwest. Arkansas southwest. They don't even list the southeast as a region.

How can you have Iowa listed in the Great Plains and neither plains or lakes section? Iowa is definitely Midwest btw

It's definitely Midwestern but I wouldn't call it Great Plains or Great Lakes. Same with Missouri, Central and Southern Illinois/Indiana, parts of Ohio, parts of Central and Southwestern Wisconsin and Southern Minnesota. It's somewhere in between the two.

But you did call it Great Plains in your post though.

its not Great Plains, which is weird because Iowa is the flattest place I've ever been in my life

Yea that was an accident. Sure Iowa is "flat" but in my opinion there's more to the Great Plains than just being flat. I can't quite pin it but the Great Plains is distinct from the Great Lakes and I don't consider Iowa to fit neatly into either and that's true for parts of a few states I put in the Great Lakes category.

I think part of it's a cultural deal. Kansas and Nebraska are distinct from Wisconsin and Minnesota both culturally and geographically and while I think Iowa geographically might resemble Nebraska more than it does Minnesota I think it has more in common culturally with the Great Lakes states which is why I put it in the neither category.

Also, while Iowa is "flat" it's not western Kansas flat.
