The North Korea threat has gotten worse. I am concerned that this won't end well.

U.S prepared to use overwhelming and deadly force in North Korea.

"The time for talk is over."

The United States has been passive toward NK for the last 8+ years. This is not a surprise.

Right... cause naming them to the axis of evil, while invading iraq for pursuit of nuclear weapons, was super tough. Paid off 40 months later with their first successful test.

Unless crazy Kim launches an attack, absolutely nothing but talk will happen with NK.

The problem isn't a military one. A war with NK would be the kind of conflict we and our regional allies are built to fight. You'd have, at a minimum, the extremely capable and modern forces of the US, South Korea, and Japan allied against a military that operates almost entirely Vietnam era systems. They would die in a rapid, massive fashion.

The trouble would come when the war was over. NK teeters on the brink of starvation in normal times. Throw in that now what infrastructure they had is destroyed and you've got a massive humanitarian crisis. We and the Japanese might not particularly care if a bunch of NKs starve, but South Korea would. They don't just share a common border and common language, they're blood relatives. As allies, we'd have no real choice but to try and mitigate the crisis.

If you manage to do that, then what happens? Reintegration with the south would not only greatly upset China, it would bankrupt South Korea. East Germany was an economic and industrial superpower compared to NK and they'd only been divided for 40 years. Nobody had to teach them how to be one people or to engage in democracy. NK has been under totalitarian rule (counting Japanese control) for over 100 years. They plain out don't know how to be free and self-ruling people.

Don't get caught up in the breathless pronouncements of the 24/7 'news' channels either looking for ratings or pushing a political agenda. We aren't starting a war in Korea, simple as that.

Also, while little Kim is crazy I'm sure his generals are not. Unless he totally disregards them when they tell him how his forces really stack up, he isn't starting a war either.

It definitely won't end well for Kim Jong-in. Korea as a whole will be much better off when N. Korea finally collapses.

Not really. Those talking heads like to talk about the number of tubes they've got pointed at Seoul but they fail to account for:

(a) The range of the weapons. Most of their artillery can't hit Seoul proper.

(b) How rapidly that artillery would be dramatically reduced by air strikes.

(c) The NK's inability to keep them supplied - which is really what got them in 1950 too. Air power decimated their supply lines then and we're a WHOLE lot better at that now.

They wouldn't come anywhere close to taking out South Korea. SK would, however, suffer significant damage - which is another economic reason why we ain't gonna start any trouble.

how do you feel about a nuke hitting a US city? It would probably be a california city, so that might cloud the decision some.

China should open their mouth and help us out. The last thing they want is for the north to fall. Then they would have a major U.S presence right on their border.

The have over 700 large pieces that can reach Seoul

For sure, but you would still have at least 20 minutes of firing before the artillery would be reduced

They are only worried about their one last nut. kind of like Russias dead man switch on their nukes

I'm not paranoid enough to think this could ever happen, nor do I watch fox News or listen to conservative talk radio.

Those worthless fricks love War, and brainwashed their stupid audience in thinking it's a possibility.

I once visited the DMZ and it seemed to me that the people of South Korea think the North could attack at any moment. They almost seem to want to finish the war and reunite the two Koreas. They don't like the presence of American and other allied forces but know that they're needed for security.

They're definitely not afraid of the North and respond quickly and very hard when the North provokes them. In my opinion, only the American presence keeps them from invading Pyongyang. It would be a short war unless China got involved. They hate the NK dictatorship and would like to rescue their people from its abuse.

This article describes my visit to the DMZ.
