My son called me today about a prank he is playing on a business in the building where he works. They have a large HDTV that is in their main display window at their business. it shows a continuous loop of their services as well as a stringer at the bottom with various messages.
It is also apparently hooked up to their cable tv. Son has a samsung phone with an IR transmitter on the top, which he uses as a remote control. he has been changing the channel on the display to show sponge bob or NHL network at random times every few hours for 2 weeks. The people at the business cannot figure out whats wrong with their display tv.

That's actually a pretty funny prank.

My wife has done this shite to me before with the tv in my man cave. She would be upstairs on her phone and turn the channel onto some stupid shite. It kept on for like a week before I figured out that she was on an app.

Yep. if you have for instance the Xfinity app on your phone you can change the channel on any tv in your house even if you arent in the room.

You can change the channel from anywhere you have internet. My 95 year old mom could never figure out the remote control, so when she couldn't get the channel she wanted, she'd call me and I'd change it from across town.
(Clarification edit:
That was with XFinity equipment and the XFinity iPhone app.)

Any Samsung? My gf used the peel remote app with her galaxy s6, but the s7 doesn't have the infrared so it didn't work with that phone. Is there a different app?
ETA: that was also before we had a smart tv. We just got a smart tv and there's apps for that

Seriously?
This is a potential prank thread we need.
Yep. Lots of providers have this capability now. I've got direct TV and can change the channel on any TV in the house from anywhere I've got access to a web browser.

I think it's pretty crappy to be honest. Maybe this is the "get off my lawn" side of me, but if I was that place of business I'd be pissed. Those people are probably making appointments with their cable provider (at a cost) to come out and look at their setup to figure out what in the world is wrong since everything seems to be set up correctly.
Once, maybe twice, ok I get it let's have a few laughs. But to keep doing it routinely is just being a shithead for no reason.

I'll relay your advice... he'll probably stop long enough to let them think its "fixed"

Where does your son work, 1993?

I played a sorta similar prank on an arse hole of a member that frequented the tennis club I worked at. He was being a real mcarse hole that day and I had set up the ball machine for him. What he didn't know was there were two remotes for the ball machine and I screwed with him for a good 20 minutes. The guy never knew that it was me and never asked for my help.

Yep, that's pretty grumpy. They know exactly what's happening. I'm high school, kids had watches that did this way before smartphones. And he's not even putting it on anything dirty. That is harmless as it gets.
I've done enough pranks, that I'll have to explain myself to St. Peter for a couple of them. These guys are getting off easy.

This is a good ransom opportunity and a chance to extort some money from that business.
