Spinoff: How much does it cost to live a middle class life?

Curious as to what people's opinions are. How much would it take for a family of 4 to live comfortably? No major extras, but comfortably.
For my area-I'd say
Rent/Mortgage-1000
Groceries-600
Gas-500
Daycare-1100 (2 kids)
Car 1-300
Car 2-300
Insurance-125
Cable-75
Internet-50
Savings-400
Phones-150
Net Income of about 4,600. So, an estimated gross of 75K.
One 40K job, one 35K job?

that's not living comfortably. that's living pretty lavishly.
you're saying that somebody in that range was "eager" enough to make 2 car payments on cars around 15-20k, depending on the length of the note, and purchase a house well in excess of 100k. that's living well beyond their means.
on a 35k salary i lived on something more like:
mortgage 680
groceries 450
gas 300
daycare - stay at home mom
no car payment (but for the sake of argument, $200 for one car payment)
insurance 75
cable and internet 100
phones 100
1905
the problem there is you're dumb (sorry) for having 2 car payments going at one time. i've never had a car payment over $200 and never for longer than 2 years. that means that you're most likely spending above 15-20k for a car... or leasing.
also, it's fine if you have a working wife, but she better be able to justify the cost of the car payment, daycare, and gas off of their salary.
i don't spend any where near that (except for groceries) and i make ~100k.

Don't forget insurances.
Edit: I saw you put 75. That seems like a vast underestimation.

Thats a good point. Day care can get pretty expensive unless you have cheap immigration labor willing to work for less. Willing to make less to cut your lawn, fix your car and houses, nanny your kids, make sure restaurant costs are cheaper, etc etc etc. If you pay all of those what they are really worth then all of a sudden your lavish life style isnt so lavish.

life, vision, dental, health, etc?
i included those in the job (deductions from there,) my current employer doesn't pay for them, but gives a lump sum and i get all 4 for about $300.

for auto? not unless you're overpaying or have a a really bad driving record.
i agree i didn't put the others though.

Its not my budget. Thats exactly the point.
So...your answer to the question is that a middle class family of 4 ought to live comfortably on 35-36K per year.

House etc. Will need if you have a mortgage and will vary depending on location.

In his scenario, I'd think 75 was reasonable. We pay a little over 100 per month for full coverage for 2 relatively nice vehicles.

i'd say a wise, financially sound lower end of the middle class should (not that i was, i just now got debt free this year except for my house) be able to get by on that.
i'm not going to say comfortably. they're not going on vacations and eating out very many meals, but it's completely livable. Again that was my capabilities at the time, but no need for 2x300 car payments, cable, and a 1k mortgage in that walk of life. i dropped cable when i had a kid and lived without internet for a few years to make ends meet.

how long does bad stuff say on there, I thought it was 4 years right?
I had some bad stuff on my record 7 years ago so I assume that's gone now, but I still pay 106 a month. In the last 5 years the only thing on my record should be 1 speeding ticket from 2 years ago. What carrier do you use?

When I made around $35K it felt like I was almost destitute. If I had a partner that also made that much and we had 2 kids on top of that, that would have been a struggle.

farm bureau. i went 10 years between speeding tickets/claims. and fortunately the one i got 2 years ago was as an employee, driving a company car. missed a school zone light flashing and was going 50 in a 25 )

I would say at least 150k to barely squeak by in a true middle class life
Posted on 5/11/15 at 5:29 pm to AUjim
Depends on where you live. Here in the delta I would say 50-60k for a middle class life for a family of four. Cost of living is cheap here.
If you make 250k here you can live like a millionaire.

This. 150k puts you in the top 11% of all tax filers (including married). Anything less than that, and you're poor.

Progressive only looks back 3 years into your driving record

For my area, Athens, $75k for a family is the minimum to call yourself middle class. If you are single with that money, you are donald trump.
Get into ATL, household income of $75k doesn't go as far as people think. You really need two income earners to combine for 100k or more before you are living the middle class lifestyle.
Just my dumb arse middle class opinion.

Ok.
Sorry I made very little money, made it work, improved my skills, got better jobs, and didn't bitch about income inequality?
I didn't say a single thing that's not true.
ETA: the only thing I can think of why you would feel that way is cost of living via geography. The 3 places I've lived in my adult life are all super low cost of living and I've lived there purposefully.
ETAAgain: I did a cost of living calculator for Temple TX vs Atlanta and my 95k would be 110k there.
