Excluding the major players like Atlanta, Nashville, etc.

Which cities in the South are taking tangible steps to turn themselves into Southern destination cities such as Asheville, Greeneville, Charleston, etc. over the next 10 years?

Help me out. I've got:

Huntsville, AL
NWA
Chattanooga, TN
Knoxville, TN
Birmingham, AL (Or has it already "arrived"?)
Added: Lexington, KY

Who would you add And or what does your list look like? I know that I have left several off

Lexington at over 1/2 million MSA might have a shot. Being at the crossroads of 2 major interstates and within day drive of 2/3 of US population is a plus. Downside is more yankees moving in to make those numbers grow.

I've never been to Lexington so I can't comment personally, but two friends of mine that I work with and respect have lived there and only had good things to say about the city. I need to get up there and check it out

what is your definition of up and coming?

i would say Huntsville already there.

from an economy standpoint, Asheville isn't.

It's already improved greatly, to the point that it's already been desirable to live in certain areas within the city limits again. But it will continue to improve more and more.

We'll call it that next tier of cities behind the major hubs like Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Nashville, etc.

Cities that are being recognized nationally for positive developments that are happening in and around them and that also offer a great quality of life, in demand housing market, access to leisure activities, employment opportunities, thriving downtowns, strong nightlife, large numbers of people moving into the area, etc.

All of these are good choices.

I think the population explosion in the Nashville metro is creating a serious housing bubble.

This^^^^^ for anyone paying attention to what is going on in that area. They have been putting in the work for years on building up the infrastructure to handle the growth.

I'm in Amarillo at the moment and I like what I see. The number of wind farms here is amazing. You get an otherworldly feel when you see them standing tall and spinning so slowly. Kind of an alien landscape.

Don't know a whole lot about Asheville's demographics/economy, but I can say it was a completely different city than it was in 2001 when I visited it last year. It was kind of a dump in 2001. The downtown area was pretty nice when I was there last summer.

The amount of new amenities and "stuff to do" in NWA right now is almost overwhelming. They've successfully replicated the "cool downtown" thing up in Bentonville, added a great art museum, culinary school, kids museum, restaurants, breweries, etc.

The mountain biking amenities they've built and are still building there are really incredible.

Rogers is right behind them, and even downtown Springdale is getting major re-investment, bars, restaurants, etc.

I love Northwest Arkansas and it gets better every year.

Eh. There is a lot of potential in the DFW area, IMO. Houston is just humid and gross and is maxed out.

Birmingham is getting better. Montgomery on the other hand is such an eye sore. I hate having to say I live in a bordering county to Montgomery.
