Was hiking on a trail at Torreya State Park in early May and almost stepped right on a Copperhead that was sitting in the middle of the trail. My trekking pole scared it just to the right as I was putting my foot down on it.

Never saw it until it moved and just missed it by inches. The only reason I wasn't bit is because it decided to bolt and not bite. Then it just stopped on the side of the trail and looked at me like "we done here or is it on?"

I decided we were done here and hiked on.

Closest (that I'm aware of) I've ever come to a poisonous snake in the wild.

What is it with all of you who are afraid of snakes?

In nature snakes eat eggs. I eat eggs as well because they are yummy. No big deal.

I actually like and appreciate snakes. We even let one of my kids keep a pet Ball Python and bred mice and rats for it to eat.

But I don't like poisonous snakes being just inches from me, no sir.

You may notice, however, that since the Copperhead left me alone, I was more than happy to leave it alone.

City folks
OMG! OMG! OMG! OMG!

Country cousins
Snakes gotta eat, so rodents gotta die.

Look when spiders get big enough to eat birds I get the concern and when snakes get big enough to eat cows and gators I make the voice to avoid that 3rd world country but most of this is weird fears that have been overinflated from watching to many movies.

I would let a handful of spiders crawl all over me than have to deal with one snake.

I would have no problem with snakes at all, but for the fact that they just lay there hidden in the grass and don't give you any warning until you step on the sons of bitches and then may or may not decide to bite you. Like what the hell, a-hole? Do I just lay in the road one side of a hill where I can't be seen by an oncoming car and expect to not get run over? frick you and frick your evolution. All snakes can die in a fire.

Kids used to tie strings to tarantula's or tie threads to bumblebees (white faces ones) and safety pin them to your lapels. Kids today are afraid of work and peanut butter, yet they say were are evolving?

Complete opposite. Save for copperheads or water moccasins, I'm cool with snakes. Spiders can go to hell though.

Country all my life but I can't completely agree.

I've got three simple rules about snakes.

1) If it is around my house and venomous, it dies. In the wild, live and let live.

2) If it bites me, it dies. IDGAF what kind it is.

3) I treat all thieves the same. I've dispatched three gray rat snakes this year for being caught in my laying boxes. If you're stealing from me, you're putting your life at risk whether you have 2 legs or none.

This snake was in the house and stealing eggs. Sucks to be him....
