The consequence of getting fired as a football coach- you (gasp) get paid millions of dollars to not work. It's about the only job in the world where being fired is a good thing. It's a motivation to do poorly at your job.

Sure you might get a raise or renogiated contract if you do well as a football coach. But barring some Zimbabwean inflation in the future I don't believe there's much of a difference between making $5 million and $ 5.5 million.

Well you kinda have to do well to get to that point.

But yes, I think that once you are there, you do your best and don't worry about the results, as you get paid either way.

Sports related occupations and executives on wall street and wall street companies are the only people who get paid for good performance and for bad performance.

It's unbelievable to me that someone who can't run a company at all gets paid a fortune to leave and not run the company.

Coaches that get to the level of having a huge buyout also have another thing that you apparently don't have. Ambition and a competitive nature. Suggest this idea to any power 5 coach and he'd laugh in your face and call you a giant pussy.

Yes...? These guys work 80-100 hours a week. He wasn't doing that to try and get fired.

You don't have the competitive fire to work up to being a major head coach and then quit trying so you can retire and not do anything. This is highly irrational thinking.

It's a high stress position but it takes time to build a program. I imagine the guaranteed money allows the coach to focus on the task at hand instead of getting fired right away. Also it's a long term investment. If you could fire a coach right away without paying him the rest of his contract ADs would be firing coaches all the time. What if Alabama fired nick Saban in his first year after losing to la Monroe?
