Anyone using Harry's or Dollar Shave Club or any of the shave clubs out there?

I'm tired of paying these inflated prices for the Gillettes. Been using them for years but they have gotten outta hand with the prices.

It's shave club time for me. I've got a thick gray beard, like cutting tree trunks. I need some advice on the shave clubs.

Dollar Shave Club is for suckers. It is basically reselling Korean blades (which you can buy more cheaply on Amazon) through an American brand name because men are brand whores when it comes to consumables.

Harry's is better, they actually make their own blades in their own factory. I don't think they are crazy better than what else is out there, but the convenience is nice.

My favorite razor currently is the Schick Hydro 5. Its blades can be found locally (and cheaply if you have a CostCo nearby) so you never get in a pinch, and its folding head design is awesome for shaving tight spaces.

But out of the clubs Harrys is the best.

Just go to a double edged, safety razor. Blades are dirt cheap, and they shave a lot better. There's a learning curve to the proper technique, but once you get the hang of it, you won't regret it.

+1. I use my late grandfather's double-edged safety razor (Gillette Superspeed II I think) from the 40's and it gives a fantastic shave. Bought a box of blades like this that will last me a very long time.

That's what I keep hearing from others ... Harry's is the best shave ever. My one concern with Harry's is that there seems to be a problem cleaning them because the blades are so close together.

I've got a really thick beard, like I'm sure many have, but mine is old and coarse and thick and it clogs razors in the first place ... so that does concern me to some degree.

I shave in the shower using soap ... just old habit. But I clean my razors, and dry them, after use.

I like the Shick Hydro, I actually have one, but the prices on the blades got outta hand for me. I live remotely, far away from normal outlets, so I am forced to buy from Wally World or CVS or what have you. I'm hoping the shave clubs might afford me some level of convenience.

Lately I've been using the Gillette, five blades with the aloe strip plus I like the single blade, for trimming under my nose, on the back. I think Harry's has that - not sure if Dollar Shave Club does and I cannot remember if the Shick does, or not.

For years, years ago, I shaved with a straight razor, a brush and a cup of soap. I've still got the entire kit.

When I went into the military, after college, I switched to the safety razor like you're talking about ... those were the days of nicks and cuts and little pieces of tissue paper to stop the bleeding.

I shave my head too ... just beats getting haircuts all the time. I've got a big pointy bumpy knotted head with lots of old scars and dents from my younger days. I recently bought one of the new-fangled safety razors advertised by Rick of Pawn Shop fame. I didn't like it. It was the same old nicks and cuts after all these years. Plus I like having the aloe strip when I am shaving my ball sack. Just sayin'. A shaved ball sack is important to my wife. I'm never again gonna trust a safety razor on the boys. I've learned my lesson.

ETA: Green arrows for everyone - thanks for taking the time with the input. This is an important decision to be made for me.

I think the shick does something better with its folding head:

The blades Dollar Shave Club uses do have that feature exactly like you expect. Just buy them off Amazon though, screw paying the extra margin:

cardboardboxer, would you happen to know if those blades you buy off of Amazon (thanks for the link btw) fit a Gillette or Shick handle?

Nevermind, after reading through the reviews I see that they do not fit other makers' handles.

I'm going to give the Dorco/Amazon option a try. (ETA: ... on second thought.)

Wait, if I do the Executive option on Dollar Shave Club that's 12 blades and a handle for $27.00. (Over three months, they bill $9 per month.)

If I do the Dorco option that's 10 blades and a handle for $26.96 including the shipping ... but that'll only last me two and a half months.

So I'd only be saving a couple of cents off of Amazon BUT I'm getting two more blades through Dollar Shave Club. Amazon gets enough of my money as it is.

I think I'm just gonna go with the Dollar Shave Club and see how that works out. Cancel anytime. Sheesh, I'll be saving big bucks over what I am paying now and they'll come to the house automatically, without me having to think about it ... which is important at my age. I've just gotta simplify things.

Anyone else wanting to give it a try - I just signed up - gonna give them (Dollar Shave Club) a try. If for nothing else, the promo video is worth watching - very original. Link

Dollar General Shave Club: 12 disposable single blade razors, $1.00 + Tax.

NEVER get clogged, although I only shave my very thick beard 2-3 times a week.

EDGE shaving cream helps.

This is the only correct answer: buy a straight razor.

Also dollar shave club isn't bad, their shaving butter shite is fantastic.

I've got quite a few. My first was a Wilkinson with and Old Spice cup and an English boar's hair brush. I've collected quit a few since ... my two favorites were Italian made I bought while living in Italy. I've got a nice German made razor too.

My wife bought me a really nice custom forged razor a few years ago ... really nice Damascus, but my hands are starting to get a little shaky so I went with modern razors ... the blade prices though, they're just ripping us off.

I'll take a picture of all my straight razors in the morning and upload it.

I got hooked on barber shaves in Italy ... and I still love to pony up when we're over there, or when we are in NYC for that matter. Nothing like a proper barber shave with a straight razor. But for now at least I'm gonna give the Dollar Shave Club a try. I'll have the first shipment by Saturday ... and I'll do a review.

I figure they'll save me about $150-$200 a year over the store bought brands.
