The robots will be accompanied by a human at first. Rides will also be free while the robots are in training.
The future is here. Are you ready for it?

The option to hail a ride in a self-driving car, which was science fiction just a few years ago, will soon be available to Uber users in Pittsburgh, the first time the technology has been offered to the general public.

I wish I had a robot lawnmower. Cutting grass is for the birds.

I am all for advancing technology but at what cost? I have a couple of problems with this.

Can't be far off with all the advancement in sensory input for robots lately. Can't wait.

What do you see as costs? Replacement of taxi drivers?

Neither will the headline, "Man killed by Robot Lawnmower gone Beserk".

1. People losing the knowledge of how much freedom is felt behind the wheel of a car.
2. Computer viruses in the system putting people in danger.
3. Satellite communication loss making a gridlock of sorts on our roadways.
4. People becoming more reliant on technology losing the ability to do for themselves.

Evolution works in mysterious ways.

Reminds me of a scene from I, Robot. I just can't ever see people movers replacing muscle cars.

This is a problem for every technology involving classic computers. It'll disappear when quantum computers become common. China just launched a satellite that is operated by quantum computers and they are calling it absolutely secure from hacking.

Worse would be an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) bomb. Of course, an EMP would cause havoc now but it seems terrorists aren't smart enough to build one.

We chose, as a species, to go down that road in the 20th century and there doesn't seem to be a way back. We are addicted to technology and demand quicker and quicker fixes. Technological development in every aspect of our lives is coming faster and faster. I think it'll ultimately culminate in an artificial intelligence that will make the decision to keep us or reap us, depending on our value to it.

Yes that is the big problem. Where are the Arabs gonna work?

I enjoy cutting grass. Especially the smell. Have a nice beer as you cut (ride) and sounds like a nice day to me.

Uber says that's one of their biggest motives for having driverless cars, the cost of human drivers. This, of course, is not new.
Factories have led the way in robotization, displacing human workers wherever robots are more cost effective. Now robots are moving into every niche possible.
It's the way of the future. It always seems far away until something like this happens.
Driverless taxis? Science fiction is becoming science fact.

Its going to take exactly one death to end this concept. Just one.

Well, maybe. It'll depend upon how important the concept is to society.
For example, the space program didn't end after the first death. There have been many, some horrific.
Of course, space exploration went on to give us countless technological benefits. Robotization promises to do the same.

There's a huge difference. Uber will be liable for their robots.

Yep. What will probably come out of this tragedy will be the incorporation of pattern recognition within the robot's brain. Or an improved version, I should say.
I'm sure a rudimentary form is already in use but it was fooled into thinking the truck wasn't there. A human brain is equipped with sensory receptors for sight, sound and, especially, motion. They will obviously have to become more sophisticated in the robots.

Yes, but I'm sure they'll have insurance against accidents of all kinds. Deaths have already come in the form of accidents and one mass murderer.

Meh. People will still be willing to risk it. Others wont, and others will. Autopilot on airplanes has lead to fatalities in the past, and planes are still in the air. The associated costs are just so low, I don't see how it's not a thing. Uber takes what? 20% of the fare? Even if they now have to pay for gas and PMs, you're easily looking at a 50% reduction in costs to the consumer. $5 to ride across town and you can text and browse the internet, and not have to pay to park or waste time trying to find a place to park? Every teenager will do that, and there could be a nightly news story about uber related deaths.
