I know Auburn has their pharmacy school and Alabama has UAB. It looks like Arkansas has a good pre med and Biomed engineering program. Any others that I need to be thinking about? I have a high school kid looking at those areas of study.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I know I'm biased, but check out Mizzou's med school.

I went to LSU undergrad and LSU HSC New Orleans for medical school. Solid education. Will be finishing residency in a year.

I've always heard that where you get your undergrad has no effect on med school admission. Its all about the MCAT score

UAMS is in Little Rock, but they have added a satellite campus about a mile from the main campus in Fayetteville. I think physical therapy is the only program that is full term at the Fayetteville UAMS-Northwest campus right now, but they will probably add a few more. The rest are 2 years Little Rock, with the option to finish out in Fayetteville. Still, kinda nice to be able to do at least 2 years of medical school in Fayetteville.

SLOW DOWN. The kid will probably change their mind a million times before grad school.

Sister did pre-med at AU, interned in the summers at Vanderbilt Hospital, and graduated near the top of her class at UAB.
Don't think where you do pre-med really matters that much

And on top of that, where you go to med school isn't nearly as important as where you do your residency

Biased but A&M is solid, with ties to every medical school in Texas. The engineering school is top notch, there is a lot you can do with a degree from there.
Source: Brother in MD/PhD school in Houston, went to A&M for Bmen and tons of friends from Bmen and pre med that went all over the place

Plenty of MDs have done undergraduate work at every SEC school.
I went to AU for undergrad and UAB for med school.
We had people from Auburn, Alabama, Samford, Birmingham Southern, MSU, Rhodes College, Yale, Texas A&M, and many other colleges.
Bottom line: You can get into med school from many colleges.

Honestly...Its hard for out of state students to get in at UAMS.
A tip...it is easier to get in if the student agrees to do "x" amount of years of service in a rural part of the state after completing the program. Probably looking at 4 years practicing some place in the delta or NE Arkansas.
Not only does that help a student get in medical school here, but they'll also kick in about $10k a year for that commitment.

I did pre med at ole miss with a chemical engineering degree and loved it. Now I'm in my first year at UMMC in Jackson. Most schools in the southeast place preference on taking instate kids, but not all. Also, i looked out of state for med school, but it was more than half as cheap to stay in state

Unless you want to go east coast for med school go to the undergrad in the state you want to go to med school/practice. All state schools block off most slots for in state applicants. Med school is about the same anywhere you go (and instate tuition is much cheaper). Residency is where the difference is made.

If you live in Alabama, UAB is the best answer, it is a top notch school all the way around
But, to be honest, Auburn would be a fine choice as well.

It doesn't matter where you go for pre-med. What matters are good grades, good MCAT, and quality research/volunteering.

This. It can play a huge part of helping you get in. My gf had a perfect gpa, but a below average MCAT. She did a ton of shadowing, research, and volunteering which played a big part in her getting in.
