I spent a week there in July. It's a beautiful place, but not one of my favorite places to stay in Florida.

We go every summer and stay there a week and the next week a little farther south on Marco Island.

Depends on what you like. If your thing is PCB, Destin, Gulf Shores then you might be bored.

If you are good with laid back and less commercial amusement you should enjoy the week.

Shelling is the best in the world and especially good after evening high tide recedes. We enjoy mixing a huge drink and going out with flashlights to check the tidal pools. Kids enjoy the nightly hunt.

Plenty of good restaurants with bars. The Island Cow is good for the family dinner. You will find your way to Captiva Island during the week. The Bubble Room is decent for meals but known for their HUGE homemade cake slices. RC Otters in Captiva Village is good.

Riding bikes, beach and shelling, eating out is really the main things we do. People who return frequently to Sanibel & Captiva do so mainly for the endless hours of shelling and the variety of shells. Can't be matched anywhere in the world.

We have lived in Ft Myers for 20 years, 20 minutes from Sanibel. It truly is close to Paradise, sunshine, very warm winters, over a hundred golf courses within 40 miles.

Very low crime for obvious reasons. Do you play golf? I will give you some tips on where to go, where are you staying?

We were going to rent a house, but time became an issue and we ended up agreeing on staying at the Waterside Inn on the beach in several different accommodations.

This is a laid back crew of five with our 80 year old mother running the show. She was here in the 50's and wanted to come back one more time. I have a grandkid assigned to her full time.

I would like to catch or spear a few fish while I'm there if possible?

You will enjoy yourself then. All of the families in my town are PCB loyalists and swear it is the be all end all of vacation destinations. If it doesn't have a Medieval Times, 8 go cart tracks, 8 putt putt courses, and amusement parks and an outlet mall they are not happy.

I think we are the only family who keeps trucking south to Sanibel or Marco Island in the summer or if we do the panhandle it is on 30A at Rosemary Beach.

You might consider driving the 40 miles to Naples one day. Vanderbilt Beach is very nice and 5th Avenue South is a great spot to eat a dinner at one of dozens of very good restaurants. Fifth Ave South is like the Rodeo Drive area of the southwest coast. Eat on a patio and watch all the Lambos and Ferraris drive by. Very ritzy if you would like to be in that scene one of the nights you are down there.

We had a fantastic full week's vacation hitting Crystal River on the way down and having my 52nd birthday dinner at Harold's in Port Richey. I've eaten at the best of the best one time or another, but the 10 ounce filet and fat skewer of prawns served up erased anything else I had stored in the memory banks.

We had a beach cottage at the waterside inn and dined out all over most were really good the cow was marginal.

Caught fish from the surf had a super nice upscale grocery store a mile away and lacked for nothing.

found two nice conch in the surf on day one and the matriarch found lots of unique shells.

$6 causeway fee keeps the riffraff away. Had 85' degree weather wind and no bugs until the red tide showed up on Thursday. Homosassa springs on Friday and back intown on Saturday.

Great trip.
