So, one of my students just happens to be a journalist for one of the largest (if not the largest) Newspaper in Mexico and is currently in Washington D.C. for the talks. If I hear anything interesting (I'm currently translating a speech for him) I will post here.

What do the rest of you think of the renegotiations?

If the discussion isn't as simple as applying a match to the document, then I don't see that they'll be very useful.

I don't know the details of the agreement, but I know one thing with 100% certainty: Anything negotiated and agreed to by a Bush or a Clinton is guaranteed to benefit them and their friends alone, and screw over the average tax paying American.

Having read some of the articles at hand: It is very anti-Mexico. I don't mean to sound disparaging to the country I live in currently, but it doesn't favor Mexico whatsoever. I'm hoping that they can do even half of the promises that were outlined.

A big one is Digital Copyright/Intellectual Property, but also cracking down on corruption.

The only factual thing I know about the current NAFTA is soon after it's signing and implementation, the medical equipment manufacturing plant in Ocala, FL shuttered it's doors and moved to Donkey frick, Mexico. My SIL and 300 of her coworkers were out on their arse.

I support the match idea.

Ross Perot was spot-on with his "giant sucking sound' quote.

When you've got two nations with such vastly different standards and costs of living, a free trade agreement is guaranteed to bring the richer nation down to the level of the poorer one. Companies aren't going to go there and pay the same wage just to help raise them to a higher level.

I think there are ways to make a trade agreement stronger and more favorable for the American working class.

They can make it better for Mexican agriculture, too.

Canada can go piss up a rope. What do they even make?

Ha. I have a better chance of hitting the power ball, and the war on drugs finally being over. Marked as a win.

Honestly, I think it's more a thumb in the eye of Mexico than anything significant -- a way to legally punish them for their SOE interference.

I'm just happy it's actually in the treaty, rhetoric is at least a step up from forcibly ignoring.
