Subject says it all. I'm interested in picking up a guide gun, lever action carbine in government .45-.70, any advice or reviews appreciated.

How exactly is a 400 grain bullet moving out at 1900 fps hipster?
Dude, I'm looking to not get eaten by a grizzly or stamped to death by a Cape Horn buffalo.
.338 Lapua just ain't select fire yet.

I'm just busting your balls.
there's other calibers ofc that can get the job done but in the end it doesn't matter.
I like marlin lever actions.
here is a compact if you hate yourself.

Marlin take down model.
Get some underwood or buffalo bore ammo

That gun is pure sex.
Do you have a newer Marlin?

I don't, no. I'm not really a lever action fan, but of the ones I've handled, I've preferred the Marlins.

Just bought a Marlin 1895GBL. Sweetest gun in my collection. 45-70 is making a hugh comeback

What kind of guiding? That's bear caliber.

I actually am not into hunting or guiding.
I will be out and about and not wanting to be food.
Simply tracking and observing. I just want to understand more about what goes on around elk.

The stainless Marlin is top notch. If it's purely for protection in the brush, might I suggest a shotgun? Lead bear spray is pretty effective at close quarters.

At least one shotgun will be making the trip for sure.

Just for giggles look up the ballistics of the .50 Beowulf.
Very close to the same ballistics as the .45-70 in an AR platform and a 14 round magazine.

I like Henrys and have an 1894 Winchester in 45-70, all I'm gonna say is put a good recoil pad on it or you won't like it. It's not near as bad as my 45-170 but it is a thumper. It will knock down most big animals but I've never had to use it against a pissed off bear but I'm sure it'll be sufficient with a couple of hits to do the job.

Gotcha.
The Marlin 1895GS 45-70 is a pretty popular item with local guides. Probably second only to a 12 ga for bear protection.

I have a Marlin 1895 Cowboy in the .45-70 caliber that I'd be willing to part with. It's not the guide gun, but it is a sweet looking gun (octagonal barrel). I've installed a ghost ring site as well as a mold-to-fit Limbsaver on the gun (installed by a gun smith). If interested, let me know. Will let it go for $800 (only 6 rounds down the tube.) I also have about 200 rounds of Hornady LeverEvolution 325 grain ammo, but that would be extra.

if you get a 45-70 and are looking for high performance cartridges (not the stuff you buy at Academy or Bass Pro), then go on-line at contact Garrett Cartridges. His stuff is a must if you're contemplating bear or cape buffalo.
Just a word of warning - shooting his stuff in a Marlin Cowboy (what I own) is not a fun experience at a range. Worst kick ever.

Shooting that 325 grain LeverEvolution ammo was not much fun, either; hence, the LimbSaver. The LimbSaver made all the difference in the world.
