If you've never heard of "the night they drove old Dixie down" you've missed out. It's by The Band, not the communist Joan Baez who covers it.

Was the night they drove old Dixie down the day they fired on sumpter, or the surrender at Appomattox?

It kind of depends on your opinion of the war, I guess. I think the Night was the day the war started. The southern leadership was foolhardy and signed the warrant of destruction when the war started.

I've listened to it thousands of times, along with everything else The Band put out.

If you're talking about songwriter intent, Robertson pretty much explained it all, including the dates: wiki

I've always thought of it broadly as a depiction of a poor Southerner getting the news and finally accepting that the South had lost, not necessarily a particular date or moment.

I was kind of relating it to things in the current political climate, I guess. After listening to the song for a few months, I think the Night they drove old dixie down was actually the day the war was declared, and (I know what the band's official intent was) I hear the lyrics about the bells ringing and people singing to mean that often, great mistakes are made to the sounds of popular applause at the time. Kind of like certain recent elections or policy decisions.

Meh, just ramblings.

Had the South had Sheman as commanding General when the war started the war would have been over with in a week and the South would have won.
After the first battle they should have crossed the Potomac, taken DC. Then went on to NYC taken it and then sued for peace then gone home.

Geez, attack DC? Why didn't Lee think of that?

I think there might have been a reason.
