Just came in to say I had never had white bbq sauce until recently and it was delicious, goes perfect with chicken and turkey. +1 to Alabama there. The one I had was from Jim -n- Nicks.

Jim and Nick's is bad. Go to Saws if you want good white sauce.

realistically North Carolina needs to be on this list

So you're saying that we should include N.C. State in any future SEC expansion based upon their Home state's BBQ?

I would be on board with that.

So then I guess by using that same logic, we're getting Oklahoma too...

I remember an episode of Man vs. Food where the guy went to a bbq place in Arkansas with something called Shut Up Juice. It looked like the most brutal spicy food challenge I've ever seen.

I love spicy food but damn.

My oldest son did that with a friend several years back. It ruined his next 48 hours, he earned the free shirt but paid dearly. The folks at that BBQ joint (The Mean Pig) said that the host stayed in the walk-in cooler for 2 hours and only came out to throw up twice.

Memphis style BBQ is essentially Bama and Mississippi Delta BBQ. It's mostly pulled pork with sauce. Occasionally, you can also find a mustard based hot slaw that is extraordinary. Only difference for Bama is that they also have a BBQ chicken niche with a mayo-apple cider vinegar sauce that is pretty tasty.

Not to be super not-picky, but Memphis is most notable for dry rub pork ribs, not pulled pork with sauce. Though, to be certain, there is a lot of pulled pork and a lot of sauce. Agreed on the mustard hot slaw. Not a slaw fan whatsoever, particularly on a shoulder sandwich, but I love slaw on, say, a sandwich from Payne's, which is probably the best sandwich in town in part because of their awesome mustard slaw. Memphis also does barbecue spaghetti, barbecue Cornish game hen, barbecue turkey ribs, barbecue anything, far more than just pulled pork. Obviously Memphis didn't invent white sauce, but you can get Alabama white at plenty of places, and Central BBQ, one of the more notable establishments, does a pretty decent mustard sauce, which is great on like their smoked chicken wings. It's a pretty different scene than the awesome barbecue shacks you run into in MS and AL (also, the barbecue in Oxford is unapologetically terrible and almost nonexistent these days) because it's so ingrained in the city's culture, and there are enough destination havens that pop up on national lists that most locals could rattle off a list of 10 different restaurants regarding 10 different qualifications (best ribs, best shoulder, best rib tips, etc.).

Kansas City is probably the only city similar to how highly Memphis reveres smoked pig, but KC barbecue is way too sweet and ketchupy for my tastes. I've enjoyed a lot about Texas barbecue (really liked Barbecue Station in San Antonio), but I'd take pork ribs and Memphis style over all of it. There's a reason the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest happens every May in Memphis Andy not in like Houston, KC, St. Louis, Charlotte, etc. It's kinda strange to me how little barbecue of note there is in north MS (particularly Oxford or nearby) and in Nashville. In general, I've always found it kinda weird that Memphis is as pig-obsessed as it is without other places in the state or region having at least a comparable affinity for the stuff

All fair.

Best place I have found since moving to the Oxford area is in Batesville. A surprising place called Burns BBq. The chicken isn't great (lemon pepper rub), but delicious pulled pork plate. The ribs are dry rub and huge.

If you can finish the pulled pork and rib combo plate .... you probably shouldnt. Way too much.

Just had a few bites of some brisket that a coworker had done. Holy shite, I knew his ribs were good (and I'm not a big rib fan) but I'd love to have some of you Texans taste and get your expert opinions. I've had good brisket before but not sure I've ever had this good.

Smoke in Covingto, LA does a really good white sauce, actually better than their regular sauce.

I was in Memphis a couple weeks ago and got blasted for ordering brisket instead of pulled pork.

I do love pork, but it's an appetizer, not the main course.

Random follow up here. Going to be in Greenville for work today. Down near Piedmont. Seeing several Mutts on the map. Any in particular that you recommend? Or any non-BBQ spot closer to Piedmont worth visiting?

Dexter MO has a few good places, but is a trek from where you are. Dexter BBQ has a full meat menu & Dexter Queen has a really good pulled pork sammich. Hickory Log isn't that good imo. In Piedmont, there's a great butcher shop, Piedmont Processing. Larry there could probably give you good local suggestions.

As a recent resident of Tennessee, the pulled pork is pretty tasty. But TX brisket is the best.

Only place I've been to in Mississippi is the Shed, which is okay. But I was raised in Florida. The BBQ fricking sucks. Sonny's is the McDonald's of BBQ.
